For years I struggled to feel loved or lovable. There are days that feed the fear and insecurity in my life, like Valentine’s Day! What is a Christian woman to do when she feels unloved? Love is powerful and confusing. We tend to see love as an emotion, but what about God’s love for me? Is that an emotion that changes and shifts?
No. Love is an action, God loves you so much and me too, and He shows it through action.
It is critical to know what the Bible says about love, God’s unfailing love! So we will see over 50 Bible verses about God’s love.
Seeking Love In All The Wrong Places
For years, love was my goal in life. To me, love was linked to happiness, fulfillment, and Joy. I dreamed about love, sought love out, and allowed emotions to guide my relationships! Yikes – how fast can you say toxic relationship target!?!?!?!
There was a crazy roller coaster of emotions when love was taken away and I wrestled with my identity.
That crazy cycle led to a lot of hurt, resentment, and bitterness. Can you relate? It really had me stuck in my walk with Christ for a lot of years. But I am living on the other side of freedom now.
When we see Love as an emotion it comes and goes.
- How many times have you said the wrong thing and lost a friend?
- I can do the wrong thing and cool the Love in my marriage.
- Often my children scream “I don’t love you” throughout the house.
- LOL, there are even days my dog gets mad at me.
Chasing that emotional love left me giving up hope for any love at all.

Emotional Love vs True Love
How do we move from emotional love to true love?
We ask better questions.
- What is God’s perfect love and how can I feel it every day?
- What is God’s love according to the Bible and how do I know it applies to me?
We have to change the pattern of emotionally driven love! I am determined to get off this crazy Toxic Love cycle. Have you been following along with the series on 1 Corinthians 13: 4-8 (each word clicks to the study).
“Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act disrespectfully or unbecomingly; it does not seek it’s own, is not provoked to anger, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth;bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, enduring all things. Love never fails.”
In that amazing chapter of the Bible – we Learned that love (God’s perfect love) is a verb, an action! This year I have determined to seek out and show that kind of action-driven love instead of emotional love.
Seeking out a 1 Corinthians 13 love – true Love in my marriage and friendships – sent me in a direction I didn’t expect… though I should have! Do you know what God says about love?

What is God’s love According to the Bible?
It is challenging to find the right words to describe God’s love because God is Love and gives love unconditionally
This year, I was reminded that we were made in the image of God and the bible says “God is love”.
Where in the Bible does it say God is Love? First, Scripture does say that God is love.
What is the Bible verse that says God is love? 1 John 4:16 is my favorite place to see this truth!
“We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” (1 John 4:16 NASB)
What God Says About True Love?
“In this is love (true love), not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” (1 John 4:10 NASB emphasis mine)
Because God is love it is natural for us to seek true love. Yea!!!!!! I’m not crazy!!!!! Who’s excited about that with me?!?!?!?!
We are all searching for true love, imagining what true love would act like.
My ideal true love would:
- Desire me
- Call me Sweet Names
- Choose me -even knowing my mess
- Take Pleasure in me
- Fight for me
- Forgive me when I mess up and not bring up my mistakes
The problem is – there isn’t a human alive that can live up to my list. Have you found one?
Human love is only a temporary imitation of the real thing – God’s love is true love!
God is the true love we are searching for. Can we just bask in the One True Love for a moment?
- God’s love is unconditional – I can’t lose it!
- He loved us before we were born – fully knowing our mess
- God’s Love is given freely -to all – and can never be cooled or lost!!!!!!
- His love is so Big it covers all my mess.

Bible Verses About God’s Love for Me
God loved us first and longs for a relationship with us.
“We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:10 NASB)
He showed His love by making a way for us to have a relationship far better than any relationship we pursue here!
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 NASB)
Because of God’s love, we can have victory in life. Nothing could ever take that Love away!!!!!!!
“But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8: 37-39 NASB)
God’s Love is Beautiful and Mysterious!
“The Lord your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” (Zephaniah 3:17 NASB)
I love the way this verse shows God is our Mighty Warrior who sings over us in joy and is quiet about our mistakes in His love! That is my idea of true love, the power of God’s love is truly revealed!
Bible Verses About Who God Says We Are
God uses loving names for us. The heart of God revealed through these verses is beautiful and inspiring!
In several places, He calls us beloved (See these 12 verses).
“May the beloved of the Lord dwell in security by Him, Who shields him all the day, And he dwells between His shoulders.” (Deuteronomy 33:12 NASB)

In Deuteronomy, God says our love is enough to bring his blessing (not only on us), but on 1000 generations of our descendants! Wow, how great is the love of God??!?!?!?!?!?!?
“Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His loving kindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;” (Deuteronomy 7:9 NASB)

How Big Is God’s Love for Us?
God’s love is so big that we can’t get the full measure of it this side of glory!!!!!

If I have learned anything while researching what Scripture says that God is love, it is this. We have to stop looking for our True love in flawed human flesh and start looking to the Only One Who encompasses all that True Love is – God!

Hope and love tend to go hand in hand and so these bible verses about hope and love are so encouraging to me as I struggle to feel that love of God. Just to be honest, I learned this set of verses in the old King James version. Lol, I think of them as my “God is love Bible verses KJV”!

Hey Tiffany, I really like this post. Seeing as it’s soon to be Valentine’s day 2019, I thought I’d read.it as a devotional….I have issues with the romantic love.described in the scriptures here..Mainly because I confuse it with sexual.love and it feels inappropriate. Anyway I’m going to write in my journal and catch up with my Pastor to get clarification. I expect it’s an immaturity on my part that I don’t seem to see the more philosophical or, um, transcendental perspective on the concept of romantic love with The Godhead. Im sure theres treatise written on this topic so I’m off to hunt them up…just thought I’d touch base on this topic as I get I’m not alone….Anyway, Happy early Valentine’s Day 2019…Mandi

Thank you, Mandi! I think women, especially, start when they are young teens to see love as only romantic. As Christian parents, we have to try to help girls open up to love as agape love (yes, I am doing the Bible study on I Cor. 13!). I think if kids could wrap their minds around love as more than something they aspire to GET, it could be less frustrating to lose a love interest. Maybe, maybe not?! I don’t know, but it is worth it to teach our kids about TRUE love. God bless you!
That is so true. I am trying to be intentional with my girls to teach them but no matter how hard I teach, Disney comes along and makes romance look so much more appealing. We’ll see how it goes when they are grown.
