Why is it so hard to be still and know that He is God? Honestly, for me, it is because I am afraid. I know… I know… There are hundreds of Bible verses about fear not, but Y’all, fear is a living breathing force in my everyday life.
I’m not proud to admit that, but God revealed it over the past few weeks learning to be still. For each and every time the Lord said, “Be still,” I said, “But God…” Can you relate?
As we move forward in understanding how to be still, we are now going to face the enemy of stillness in our lives. Fear.

Conviction…
Why study these Bible verses about fear not? Because God says a lot about fear and if I don’t understand where God stands on this issue I will be destined to repeat the same destructive patterns my whole life.

I am afraid. Do you live with fear? What kind of things are you afraid of?
- Poverty
- Failure
- Sickness
- Loss of loved ones
- Conflict
- Betrayal
- Abuse
- Loneliness
- Lack of control
Those are just some of my fears.
Now listen, these are not ridiculous or unfounded fears. Each and everything on my list of fears comes from a real place in my past or present. These are hard things that have happened in my life and I am afraid of the hurt being repeated.
Why Do We Have To Re-Learn Trust?
Can we trust God when He allows hard things in our past, present, and future?
I was crying with a friend last week about this. It’s not like God hasn’t had to teach me to be still before. We’ve been here before, God and I, and I can’t believe I am here again… doubting, fearful, and anxious.
Every time a storm comes into my life I wrestle with fear over trust.
- Homelessness
- Where I really doubted God even cared about us.
- My first miscarriage
- Losing a baby caused me to struggle with fear and being still.
- Divorce
- I was anxious and could not be still.
- My parents’ divorce
- We were back at it again.
- My best friend committed suicide
- I wrestled yet again.
- The church split
- Dear friends and trusted mentors turned on each other I literally ran from God.
- More miscarriages
- More fear.
- A difficult marriage
- This tested my faith and trust in God in more ways than I ever imagined.
- A child with special needs
- Pushing the limits of my patience and faith.
- Financial hardships
- Send me back to that place of fear.
- Chronic illness that brings chronic pain
- I am struggling to be still and trust God.
What God Says About Fear?
What are the hard things that cause fear in your life right now?
As I’ve wrestled with God over these fears, I rationalize them in order to hold onto them. They feel like a real part of who I am. Can you relate?
Long ago I asked questions like:
- What verse in the Bible says to have no fear?
- and What does the Bible say about fear not?
- What does God say about fear and anxiety?
- How many times is “fear not” in the Bible?
After years of studying this topic, I learned that the Bible tells me (repeatedly) that God does not give a spirit of fear. This means that those fears are not of God. The Bible also tells me that God gives us a spirit of love.
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” (2 Timothy 1:7 NASB)
God’s love, His perfect love, casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
Fear is the opposite of love.
Receiving and walking daily in God’s love requires faith in God, and trust in God to release those fears. And we can rest in that because honestly, God loves us!
Honestly thought, even knowing God loves me, I wrestle with fear. No wonder God repeats the message with so many Bible verses about fear not!
How Many Times Does the Bible Say Fear Not?
Is ‘do not be afraid’ in the Bible 365 times? The first time I heard that number I was shocked, but fear really is mentioned hundreds of times. Goes to show you how well God knows us!
Actually, the Bible mentions fear over 400 times (here are 7 Verses on fear to gain victory in your life from Flourishing Today).
That gives me hope. You are not crazy to be afraid, you are just human! And we can have hope to overcome fear!!!!!!!!! We can use these Bible verses overcoming fear with success!
God talks about fear over 400 times in the bible. 365 of those times He says something like, “Fear not for (because) I Am…” He then goes on to name a part of His character that we can claim every single time we are afraid.
Y’all those are living breathing promises we can write out, meditate on (if not memorize), and claim, (hold God too) when the hard things come!
We. Can. Claim. God’s. Promises. Every. Single. Time. We. Are. Afraid.
