Why is it so hard to Be Still and know that He is God? Honestly, for me, it is because I am afraid. I know I know, we are told over and over again to Not Fear but Y’all, fear is a living breathing force in my everyday life. I’m not proud to admit that, but God revealed it over the past few weeks learning to be still. For each and every time He said Be Still I said: “but God…”. Can you relate? As we move forward in understanding how to Be Still we are now going to face the enemy of stillness in our lives. Fear.
Did you find this mid-series? We are in a 40-day Fast to learn how to be still and know God. Go back here and read the intro and keep up with series.
Over and over again we see when God said Be Still He was saying Trust Me. And I thought I trusted God but I am not good at being still.
Why can’t I trust God?
I am afraid. Do you live with fear? What kind of things are you afraid of?
- Loss of loved ones
- Lack of Control
Those are just some of my fears. Now listen, these are not ridiculous or unfounded fears. Each and everything on my list of fears comes from a real place in my past or present. These are hard things that have happened in my life and I am afraid of the hurt being repeated.
Can we Trust God when he allows hard things in our past, present, and future?
I was crying with a friend last week about this.
It's not like God hasn't had to teach me to Be Still before. We've been here before, God and I, and I can't believe I am here again... doubting, fearful, anxious. Click To Tweet
- There was a time of homelessness, where I really doubted God even cared about us.
- When I miscarried my babies I struggled with fear and being still.
- After the divorce, I was anxious and could not be still.
- When my parents divorced we were back at it again.
- After my best friend committed suicide I wrestled yet again.
- When the church split and I saw my dear friends and trusted mentors turn on each other I literally ran from God.
- More miscarriages brought more fear.
- A difficult Marriage has tested my faith and trust in God in more ways than I ever imagined.
- Financial hardships send me back to that place of fear.
- Now I have a Chronic Illness that brings chronic pain and I am struggling to be still and trust God.
What are the hard things that cause fear in your life right now?
As I’ve wrestled with God over these fears I rationalized them in order to hold onto them. They feel like a real part of who I am. SMH even to write that. Can you relate?
What verse in the Bible says you have no fear?
But the Bible tells me (repeatedly) that God does not give a spirit of fear so those fears are not of God. The Bible also tells me that God gives us a spirit of Love.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.
God’s love, His perfect Love, casts out fear (1 John 4:18). Fear is the opposite of Love. Receiving and walking daily in God’s love requires faith in God, trust in God to release those fears. And we can rest in that because honestly, God loves you!
Is do not be afraid in the Bible 365 times?
Actually, the Bible mentions fear over 400 times (here are 7 Verses on fear to gain victory in your life from Flourishing Today).
That gives me hope. You are not crazy to be afraid, you are just human! And We can have hope to overcome fear!!!!!!!!!God talks about fear over 400 times in the bible. 365 of those times He says something like: Fear Not for (because) I Am... Y'all those are living breathing Promises we can hold God too when the hard things come! Click To Tweet
God talks about fear over 400 times in the bible. 365 of those times He says something like: Fear Not for (because) I Am… He then goes on to name a part of His character that we can claim every single time we are afraid. Y’all those are living breathing Promises we can write out, meditate on (if not memorize) and hold God too when the hard things come!
