Why Can’t I Trust God?
I am afraid. Do you live with fear? What kind of things are you afraid of?
- Loss of loved ones
- Lack of Control
Those are just some of my fears.
Now listen, these are not ridiculous or unfounded fears. Each and everything on my list of fears comes from a real place in my past or present. These are hard things that have happened in my life and I am afraid of the hurt being repeated.
Why Do We Have To Re-Learn Trust?
Can we trust God when he allows hard things in our past, present, and future?
I was crying with a friend last week about this. It’s not like God hasn’t had to teach me to be still before. We’ve been here before, God and I, and I can’t believe I am here again… doubting, fearful, anxious.
Every time a storm comes into my life I wrestle with fear over trust.
- Where I really doubted God even cared about us.
- My first miscarried
- Losing a baby caused me to struggle with fear and being still.
- I was anxious and could not be still.
- My parents’ divorce
- We were back at it again.
- My best friend committed suicide
- I wrestled yet again.
- The church split
- Dear friends and trusted mentors turn on each other I literally ran from God.
- More miscarriages
- More fear.
- A difficult Marriage
- Tested my faith and trust in God in more ways than I ever imagined.
- A Child With Special Needs
- Pushing the limits of my patience and faith.
- Financial hardships
- Send me back to that place of fear.
- Chronic Illness that brings chronic pain
- I am struggling to be still and trust God.
What God Says About Fear?
What are the hard things that cause fear in your life right now?
As I’ve wrestled with God over these fears I rationalize them in order to hold onto them. They feel like a real part of who I am. Can you relate?
Long ago I asked questions like:
- What verse in the Bible says you have no fear?
- and What does the Bible say about fear not?
- What does God say about fear and anxiety?
- How many times is fear not in the Bible?
After years of studying this topic, I learned that the Bible tells me (repeatedly) that God does not give a spirit of fear so those fears are not of God. The Bible also tells me that God gives us a spirit of Love.
“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7
God’s love, His perfect Love, casts out fear (1 John 4:18).
Fear is the opposite of Love.
Receiving and walking daily in God’s love requires faith in God, trust in God to release those fears. And we can rest in that because honestly, God loves us!
Even knowing God loves me, I wrestle with fear. No wonder God repeats the message with so many Bible verses about fear not!
How Many Times Does the Bible Say Fear Not?
Is do not be afraid in the Bible 365 times? The first time I heard that number I was shocked, but fear really is mentioned hundreds of times. Goes to show you how well God knows us!
Actually, the Bible mentions fear over 400 times (here are 7 Verses on fear to gain victory in your life from Flourishing Today).
That gives me hope. You are not crazy to be afraid, you are just human! And We can have hope to overcome fear!!!!!!!!! We can use these Bible verses overcoming fear with success!
God talks about fear over 400 times in the bible. 365 of those times He says something like: Fear Not for (because) I Am… He then goes on to name a part of His character that we can claim every single time we are afraid. Y’all those are living breathing promises we can write out, meditate on (if not memorize), and claim, (hold God too) when the hard things come!
We. Can. Claim. God’s. Promises. Every. Single. Time. We. Are. Afraid.

There are even more Bible verses about worry and stress, but I need hope more than inspiration or encouragement with the issue of fear.
What Does God Say About Fear and Anxiety?
The topic of fear and anxiety often cross and can be a bit confusing. As a person who struggles with clinical anxiety and PTSD, I don’t want to confuse the issue.
You can struggle with fear and not anxiety and most anxiety is not actually based on fear. To learn more about Biblical anxiety and how I work to overcome it through prayer and Scripture read this.
I have to admit up front I am partial to the promise, “so do not fear for I am with you.” It comforts me that God never leaves us in the midst of so many trials. As we read through these promises today I just want you to slowly let them sink into your heart.
You can trust God and give Him the fear as you claim these promises – Bible verses about fear not!
