Oh, the controversial topic of a wife’s role in a Christian marriage. It is a beautiful responsibility. You carry the weight of your household. Sometimes, the weight is heavy, other times it is light. Some days are harder but other days make it completely worth it. I truly believe as wives we have a specific and anointed role to play… but is this something you can find joy in amongst the debate? I believe it absolutely is!
Is Joy missing in your life? Need a guide to help get it back? I’d love to give you this Free 30 Day Reading Guide to help.
What steals the joy from a godly wife in her role?
We spend so much time debating a wife’s role in a Christian marriage that we rarely give it our full effort. You’ve heard that “Comparison is the thief of joy“and we compare ourselves to the wives around us – the wives on TV, the wives of the past – too much.
What if we stopped comparing our roles and started looking in the Bible to see how God wants us to act?
What if we chose to be godly wives living from a Biblical Worldview?
The bible is the first place we should be looking for marriage advice. As well as prayer, talking to your Pastor, and seeking advice from trusted friends and family. There are so many good books out there with Godly advice for whatever season you are in. A healthy marriage should be constantly poured into.
I have found joy in speaking the following scriptures over me and my marriage. Believing the Scripture for myself as a wife. They are not secrets (though they are foreign to our culture) that have to be read quietly in secret meetings. We can Proclaim them over ourselves and Reclaim Joy in our Role as Godly Wives!
I challenge you to read the following declarations over yourself. Use your name and proclaim them. Pray the scriptures listed over your marriage.
10 Secrets (not really secrets) to Reclaim Joy in a Godly Wife’s Role
A Godly Wife is Servant-Minded
Proverbs 31:15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens.
We are always focused on who we can serve and how. How can I help the woman next to me right now? How can I serve my husband and my children today?
A Godly Wife is kind
Titus 2:4-5 so that they may encourage the young women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored.
We are called to be kind. We treat others as we would want to be treated, even when it’s hard.
She remembers Holiness
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.
The hard truth is that grace has replaced Holiness in Christian culture. The perfect combination is Grace + Holiness.
She works hard
Proverbs 31:17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong.
We set the example for our children and our friends. We give it our all in every moment.
She loves her husband
This one is supposed to be easy, but is it always? We need to accept our husbands with grace and understanding.
Do you need some encouragement to keep pressing into that Daily Commitment?

She has self-control
We act after we think. We are disciplined in situations that pull us out of our comfort zone.
She is faithful
Exodus 20:4; “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Proverbs 23:27 For a harlot is a deep pit And an adulterous woman is a narrow well
I don’t really need to explain this one. Our marriage is based on faith and being faithful to one another. Matthew 5.28 even says looking lustfully at another is adultery.
She stays modest
1 Timothy 2:9-10 Likewise, I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments, but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness.
Modesty is all about how we present ourselves. We respect our bodies. We are careful about what comes out of our mouth. True modesty is all about honoring Jesus and pointing away from ourselves and toward Him.
She submits to her husband
Colossians 3:18-19 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.
Ephesians 5:22-24 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.
We submit to our husbands as a leader, but he is not superior to you in any way. This is a tricky verse to explain in a short few sentences so I challenge you to do some digging yourself and read the scriptures listed.
She cares for her home
Proverbs 31:13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight.
I personally love having this responsibility. We create order where there is chaos. We take care of those that have been entrusted to us.
What we need to remember: We are trying our best. That’s the truth, Y’all. If you are reading this right now, I know you care. You care about your family, and you care about your marriage. That is enough. YOU are enough. Rest in that truth today.
I love Jesus and I drink way too much coffee. Wife to the best hubs. THANKFUL. Always trying to make every day the best day ever.
