Is there a person in scripture that you kinda hate? Well, maybe hate is a strong word… The Woman from Proverbs 31 is one I would rather skip, ignore and pretend I don’t need to study at all.
The Proverbs 31 Woman has set the bar so high I could never measure up – and so I’d rather ignore her. But God… don’t you just love and hate that phrase. But God would not let me leave her out of our series on Effective Prayer Strategies! So far we’ve seen
- How to Create a Prayer Strategy that will change Every Thing
- How to Pray Powerful Effective Prayers over My Own Life
Today I will take Proverbs 31:10-31 and turn that into a Prayer over my own life.
It seems an appropriate passage to use to kick off our series of Praying over our own lives. Not that I believe I will ever measure up to that godly Woman’s example, but I see God molding me and changing me into it more and more every day – when I ask Him.
Fist we will read the passage. Then I will turn it into a simple prayer we can pray over our lives. I’m also going to highlight some phrases in the passage to help us focus our time because it is long.
10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain.
12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.
13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight.
14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar.
15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens.
16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong.
18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands grasp the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies belts to the tradesmen.
25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying:
29 “Many daughters have done nobly, But you excel them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
31 Give her the product of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.

Turn Proverbs 31 into a Powerful Effective Prayer
To be a godly wife that my husband can trust
Father, please give me clear guidance and direction in my life. I long to be a wife that is excellent. Teach me Your ways here and help me step into that day by day. As a wife, I pray you would help me accept who my husband is in this moment and teach me to leave changing Him up to You. I know he longs to be loved, accepted and respected for the person he is – rather than nagged and “Helped” to become the man I wish he were. Please forgive me for wasting so many years on this purpose when all along You are working and molding him. Help me to trust You more God! I know in making this change I will do him good and not evil all the days of our life – and please let that be many many days to come!
A godly woman is a diligent worker
Thank You for showing that a godly woman can be a working woman. Whether I am blessed to stay at home – and work diligently to care for my home and children – or whether I am called to work outside of them home I am thankful to know You see my value, Father!
Help me to work diligently wherever you have called me. Teach me to delight in the work of my hands – even the tedious work like laundry and bookkeeping. They are all important somehow and I long to glorify you in even them. Give me knowledge and discernment to take care of our finances. Show me how to stretch what we have and be a good steward of those financial resources you have blessed us with. Give me a heart that finishes what I begin and takes care of the people in my care.
A godly woman is strong and not fearful
Please God also help me to care for my body to endure the calling You have given me. To honor this Temple of Yours in a way that brings health and a long life of service to You. Teach me to ignore the voice of the enemy that would discourage me from pursuing Your Calling in my life. To step out in faith in every hard season weather helping the poor, being poor ourselves or dealing with hard situations and seasons. Help me always step out in faith and show dignity as I walk humbly with You. Regardless of our situations, I pray for our family to have a reputation that is above reproach – and that my husband would be well respected.
Fear the Lord and trust Him with our whole life.
Help us always embrace the future by trusting You will all our hearts and leaning not on our own understanding! We will believe that You will always make our paths straight – even when we can’t understand or see the way! Give me wisdom Father, keep me firmly planted in the truth of your Word so that I am able to teach with kindness on my tongue. Help those things to season my speech when life is hard, my children are driving me crazy and my husband is not meeting the expectations I should not have put on him anyway. Each day help me to look well to my household and keep laziness far from me.
One day help see some of the harvest from this life – to see my children walking as disciples of yours, to see my husband loving me the way You loved the Church, to see this ministry prosper and bless countless lives… But more than anything I long to one day hear your precious voice say “My daughter you have done nobly and you excel them all.”
Thank you in advance for changing me, molding me, teaching me to fear You Lord and above else… never giving up on me. For being an Again kind of God and for Your Mercies that are new each morning! Amen!
