Peace of Mind… in the midst of this drama filled world – is possible!!!!!!! It is when we focus on Truth…
“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things” (Philippians 4:8 NASB).
And then he tells us…
I love words. If the Holy Spirit took the time to inspire several specific words I believe they each have practical meanings.
You should know that I am not a Bible Scholar. I research the words using concordances and online commentaries. I love the resources at Biblegateway.com and blueletterbible.org. Using them, anyone could dig deeply into the scriptures.
Word #1 Is this thought True“? Maybe rephrase it to “is this a fact“? We have to evaluate our thoughts objectively – no emotion allowed. Sometimes I need a second opinion from someone not directly affected by the situation.
I love that research proves what God instructs us to do! We actually believe what we think, hear and say. It is crucial to not let our mind linger on emotionally driven… partial truths. Check out “We Believe what we tell ourselves” and “Do Your Thoughts Matter“.
I need to be sure I believe what is true about several areas of my life. I can then Take Captive any lies with replace them with truth. If I can’t think of a true thing (like when emotions cloud my mind) I think scripture! I actually have scripture taped up all over my house to help me!
Truth about myself
I am a Loved Child of God (1 John 3:1 NASB).
I am Chosen by God (1 Peter 2:9 NASB) (a royal princess)
Truth about God
God will Never Leave me or Forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV)
Nothing is impossible with God (Mark 10:27 NASB).
Truth about others (even in marriage)
I tend to think in the extremes, like “he always does…” or “he never does…” Always and Never are not true thoughts. I need to be careful to think things that are true rather than emotional… because it’s easy to let the emotion escalate and then I am giving you (or someone else) a piece of my mind and losing my peace of mind. 🙁
Plus, if I am forgiving others regularly (for help with that, check out the series on Forgiveness), then I am no longer keeping a running log of their offenses, so this offense has to stand alone. A true thought would be “what he just did hurt me”.
When I can’t think a true thing about someone else, I go to scripture!
The Bible tells us to think well of others (Philippians 2:3-4 NASB).
Truth in Politics
Bear with me as I step up onto a soap box you didn’t know I had tucked away 😉
We have got to start a new habit: Verify the facts from News or newsfeeds before believing them (or sharing them or condemning others with them). News-people seem to start with their opinion and find the facts that support that… even making them up as they go along.
It is more and more common for the news to not be reliable. So I habitually find both sides and see where facts line up so that I can toss out the opinions… Seriously, I am an intelligent woman and when given the real facts I can form my own opinion – Thank you very much!
I believe the bible tells us we can only expect this to get worse (2 Timothy 3:1-5 NASB), so we must learn to find the truth and avoid the sensationalism.
I hope that helps you begin to think of what is True.
Let me know your thought in the comments section below.
What other areas would you like to dig into? Are there verses that help keep you centered in truth? I’d love to hear from you about it!
