Why Pray Identity in Christ Verse Over Your Spouse?

Why does it matter if you pray these identity in Christ verses over your spouse?

It is critical to understand our identity in Christ. Why is it important to know your identity in Christ? You can’t grow in faith unless you know what God says about you.

Growing in faith is what we are called to do as Believers. When we grow in faith, every area of our life improves. Every area. That includes our marriage.

Praying Over a Broken Marriage

For years I’ve worked hard to keep hope and joy in the midst of a difficult marriage. It’s tough to keep my eyes on Jesus when all around me I feel… stuck… overwhelmed… alone in the battle…

I find myself longing for the kinds of relationships I see all around me… the ones where I only see their public side, the good side they allow others to glimpse. I want the happily ever after.

But the reality is I am less than perfect and he is less than perfect. We have been in crisis mode for over a decade. The battles range from raising a Special Needs child, to caring to dying parents and so many things in between.

When you were already in a difficult marriage, and you add in a decade of crisis, that marriage feels broken. Why? Neither of us had time or energy to invest in building it back up.

So here I am… a wife who at times feels like a prisoner… but who gave her yes to God and longs to see healing and restoration.

Intercessory Prayer

I know that our marriage will never recover if we are not both growing in faith. I also know, after 20 years of marriage, that he is not going to pursue growth in this area. It is scary. He is afraid and lacks a point of reference for what it should look like.

So, I am committed to praying fervently over his faith. I am committed to being a Prayer Warrior Wife, interceding for my husband.

In his heart, I know he loves me and wants our family to be blessed. But the work involved to accomplish that… it’s more than he can bear alone. Shweew, it’s more than any of us could bear alone. Right?

We all need Jesus to hold us together and carry us through!

As his wife, it is my calling to be his helpmate in this area… even if he never knows I am praying this way… even if he fights the growth…

Prayer changes things!

Divorce is Not An Option

Why else am I praying over this identity in Christ verses list for my husband? Why am I so determined to intercede for his spiritual growth?

The secular message would be to divorce him. He’s not trying. He’s not growing. The marriage is broken. Why not divorce him?

There are several Biblical reasons for divorce. I am not living in one of those. (See what they are here ~>7 Biblical Reasons For Divorce And Practical Steps For Each)

What’s more, I know God called me to stay and fight for this marriage. I heard Him say, “Wait.”

I’d rather feel stuck than walk in direct disobedience to God. What about you?

I’ve lived life on my own terms in the past and know the misery of wilful disobedience to my Savior. There is no peace or joy in that life. So I will walk His way, even if it’s hard.

Prayer Won’t Fix It All

Let me just pause for a moment, because I know there are people reading this who will take it the wrong way. In my situation, God has not given me peace about divorce. But know that I am not JUST PRAYING and hoping that fixes everything.

Prayer alone will only get you so far!

There are also difficult situations. There is accountability. We are seeking professional help. There have been boundaries set in place. We have a plan.

Don’t just sit back and hope that prayer will fix all the things. Prayer is essential. It will hold things together while you work toward change, but it will not be enough in a broken marriage.

Abuse, Infidelity and Abandonment

If you are in a situation where a broken marriage is more than just a human failing, you need to get out and get more help.

Abuse requires separation and help.

Infidelity requires separation and help.

Abandonment requires legal separation and help.

Be safe. Pray. Yes, always pray, but be safe first.

Called To Be A Prayer Warrior Wife

I don’t know what God has called you to in your marriage. However, I believe He has called all of us to pray intentionally over our spouse. You were put together, made one flesh with that human being. They struggle and need you as you struggle and need them.

Prayer is how we support each other in the hard season. This series of prayers for a broken marriage is what I need in this season. I need the accountability of a community also living in the struggle. Together we can support each other while we pray for the change that only God is capable of motivating.

I have been called to be a Prayer Warrior Wife.

How about you?

Identity in Christ Meaning

Define Identity in Christ:

This is more than just identifying as a Christian after you are saved and baptized. The term Christian is actually vague and ambiguous in today’s culture.

Knowing what our identity in Christ is goes beyond being religious or spiritual. You see when you begin to walk in the Christian faith, you enter a relationship with a real being – God, the Creator of the Universe.

What Is Our Identity In Christ Verses to Pray

Okay, so these will also be in the My Identity in Christ Verses PDF at the end. Don’t get overwhelmed!

These Scriptures tell us just what God thinks of us. After the verse, I will share some prayers based on the verse.

You Are Made In His Image: Identity in Christ Verses

From the very beginning, it has been clear that we were made in the image of God. Somehow we look like Him. That’s beautiful!

“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.” (Genesis 1:27 ESV)

The truth is repeated in the New Testament.

“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” (1 Corinthians 12:27 ESV)

Not only are we made in His image, but when we are saved we become one spirit with Him!

“But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with him.” (1 Corinthians 6:17 ESV)

PRAYER About Being Made in His Image

Father God,

This crazy world has twisted the beauty of creation. I pray for protection over my husband’s mind about gender identity and sexual orientation. Give him a clear picture of who he is physically, mentally, and sexually.

When he is tempted to sin, remind him that he is the Body of Christ now and has become one spirit with You. Let him have a mental picture of living life joined with You, bringing You into every area of his life. When he watches something, let him register that You are watching. When he says or does something, let him question if that would please You.

As he begins to shift how he views his body, let him desire to honor and glorify You alone with it.

Amen

You Were Chosen By God: Scripture on Our Identity in Christ

Not only were you made in God’s image, but He then chose you. You were never a mistake. Before the world began He had you in mind! Chosen. Let that sink in!

“Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” (Colossians 3:12-14 ESV)

Not only chosen but made holy. We are called a royal priesthood! God possesses us. He called us from nothing for a purpose in this life!

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)

You Were Appointed for a Purpose

The idea that God chose us feels hard to awesome to accept. Right? Me. Here. Now. Why? Why choose me from all the rest of humanity? It pleased Him to choose you. And being chosen wasn’t all! He appointed you for a purpose!

“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.” (John 15:16 ESV)

We are to bear fruit to lead others to the Father. Toward that end, He will answer our prayers! Beautiful.

He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him” (Ephesians 1:4 NASB)

Chosen For This Time: Identity in Christ Verses

Not only did He choose you and call you to bear fruit and lead others to the Father, but He picked this time. This specific era of time is when He called you to do the work set before you. It is not a mistake you were born now and called to do the work He set before you!

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works…” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)

“And who knows whether you have not attained royalty for such a time as this?” (Esther 4:14 ESV)

Engraved On His Hand

You were not a mistake. God planned you and chose you to be His. He refuses to forget you!

“Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are continually before me.” (Isaiah 49:16 ESV)

PRAYER About Being Chosen By God

Precious Holy Spirit,

I know my husband doubts he has value or worth in any area of his life. He feels like a failure, a loser, a waste of life. But that is a lie. You chose him before time began! He is not a mistake. He was on Your mind at creation. You called him into this royal priesthood. Never let him forget that You picked him as Your own possession!

He has a purpose in this life. My husband wrestles with what job to pursue and feels like there is no meaning to the physical work he has done in the past. He struggles to believe You chose him and appointed him here to do a work for You. There are days he can’t see the fruit You are cultivating in his life.

Help him see that You chose him before the creation of time and from that place of confidence let him ask and grow. Remind him that You love him so much that You engraved him on the palms of Your hands. He’s not a mistake. You don’t regret Him. In fact, You remember Him, bless Him, and long to support him in this struggle.

Amen

We Have Been Redeemed

God chose you and called you and prepared a great work for you to accomplish in this life during this time. He also redeemed you from the mess you were before you met Him! Isn’t that amazing?

“But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1 ESV)

How did he redeem you from that mess? His blood paid the price to forgive all your sins

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us.“ (Ephesians 1:7 NASB)

The power of His redeeming blood put to death your old self! That allowed you freedom from being enslaved to sin so you could do the work He called you to do!

“We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.” (Romans 6:6 ESV)

You Have Been Bought With A Price

That redeeming work Jesus did for you at Calvery, cost Him much. There was pain and anguish. We owe Him everything because of what He purchased for us. We never could have paid that price, never could have been with Him because our sin was so great!

For you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:20 ESV)

So we offer back what we can to Him. Our very lives, bodies, souls, and minds, are meant to be His.

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 ESV)

PRAYER About Being Redeemed

Precious Jesus,

You stepped down out of eternity and gave up Your throne in glory to redeem us. Thank You. Never let us take that for granted! You created us, formed us, then redeemed the mess we made of this life. Help my husband to remember he is Yours, that You have called him by name!

When he is tempted to wander or live life according to his own will, his own understanding, please remind him of the price You paid. You redeemed us through Your very blood. Your blood is what made possible the forgiveness we take so lightly. You lavish him with Your love but help him think of that blood before he walks toward sin and rebellion.

At salvation, he was made new. The old self was crucified, but it fights to be reborn. Help him fight the chains of sin and the patterns of falling into temptation.

He was bought with a price. Remind him to glorify You with each choice. To glorify You, specifically in his body. To offer it as a living sacrifice to You. Help him remember You dwell within him and his body is now a temple of God. Let him glorify You in all he does, thinks, and says.

Amen

You Are Called

It is easy to fall into complacency as a Christian. We were chosen and redeemed, but then forget that we are also called to a purpose in this life. This life is not about achieving secular success, prosperity, or happiness. No, we are called to win the list, love the unlovable, and be God’s hands and feet.

“Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,” (2 Timothy 1:9 ESV)

In that calling, we are friends of God.

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.” (John 15:15 ESV)

We Are Called By Name

That calling on our lives is not generic. Nope, God has a specific calling on your life. He knows your name and claims you as His own. He has a specific calling for each of us individually.

“But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.” (Isaiah 43:1 ESV)

“Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” (Psalm 100:3 ESV)

Called to Be Salt and Light

What will that call look like? It will rub the lost world the wrong way. Salt preserves but also brings out impurities. No one likes salt rubbed into an open wound the way we are called to be salt to a sinful world.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? … “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.” (Matthew 5:13-14 ESV)

Light exposes sin and depravity. When we live for Jesus, shining His light, it will make everyone around us uncomfortable. They will hate our light because in it they feel guilty for their darkness.

“For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8 ESV)

We Are Ambassadors For Christ

Part of our calling is to be ambassadors for Christ, sharing His message of love and salvation to a lost and dying world.

“Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.” (2 Corinthians 5:20 ESV)

We share the message of the gospel through righteous living.

“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV)

How Will We Walk In Our Calling?

Living in a way that the culture won’t like will be difficult. How will we accomplish what He has called us to? God will be working in us!

for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13 NASB)

PRAYER For Your Calling

You are the God Who Sees,

Thank You for choosing us and redeeming us. Thank you that we have been called by You into a new life! When my husband begins to struggle with what he has or hasn’t accomplished in life, remind him that YOU called him for Your own purpose. You called him a friend, not a servant to the expectations of this society.

You put a specific calling into his life, based on the life he has lived and the design You used when creating him. He is Yours. Your son, called by Your name.

You made him to live differently than this world, being salt and light. That means his purpose won’t look like all the things the culture expects. Remind him that it is okay to look differently as long as this life pleases You. The world’s way is darkness, but Your way as peculiar as it is, is light. Give him a deep desire to walk in the light.

He is Your spokesperson, called to love others as YOU love them. Give him eyes and a heart to see them as YOU see them. Embolden him to reject the pleasures of this world in exchange for living as the righteousness of God.

When it all feels like too much for him, remind him that You are the One who should be doing the work. It is not for him to try and fail and try again. Instead, it is for him to trust YOU and surrender all to You to work through him. In that space, he will know peace and joy like he’s never experienced before. Thank You for this change in advance.

Amen

You Are A New Creation: Scripture About Our Identity in Christ

The life you lived before knowing Christ Jesus was a mess. When He comes in, the old is replaced with a new life!

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” (2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV)

The new life is as different as going from death to life.

“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:13-14 ESV)

It isn’t enough that God calls you by name, and has engraved your name on His hand… No, He gives you a new name to match the new life He birthed in you!

“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, to him I will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and a new name written on the stone which no one knows but he who receives it.’” (Revelation 2:17 NASB)

PRAYER About Becoming A New Creation

Father of Light,

Thank You for making a way to this new life. It is strange and confusing at times to think that who we were before we met You is dead. Help us to walk fully in the new life You birthed at the time of our salvation.

The life my husband and I lived before fully surrendering to YOU was a mess of sin and depravity. At times it beckons us back. Give us the strength to fight through the temptation. Show us the way of escape. Then give us the courage to walk that way rather than giving into the desires of the flesh.

You have given us a new name. Help us never live as though the old name were still true. Help my husband as his identity is tied to his work win so many ways. Teach him that hew new identity in Christ is tied to You, Your will, Your way, Your pleasure alone.

Amen

You are Protected

There is also a promise that part of your identity in Christ is protection. He has sealed you against possession by the enemy. He has also sealed you as a promise of eternity!

“you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of the promise,” (Ephesians 1:13 NASB)

Part of that protection is that He hides you behind Himself. The enemy has to go through Him to get to you! Wow!

“For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” (Colossians 3:3 ESV)

That protection is also physical. The God of Angel Armies is on our side!

“And he said, “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are greater than those who are with them.”” (2 Kings 6:15-17 NASB)

PRAYER About Being Protected

You are Jehovah Sabaoth, the God of Angel Armies,

Part of who we are, chosen, called, adopted children of God is protected. You seal us when we accept You into our lives. That seal is a holy protection from an always warring invisible enemy who would possess and torment us. It is also a protection of our soul, marked as Yours for all eternity. Nothing can pluck us from Your hands. That is crazy amazing protection.

As part of the protection You placed over us is a protection from the wrath and judgment of God. When God the Father, in his role as Ancient of Days, Great Judge… when He sees us, He sees the blood of the Lamb. He sees us hidden with Christ, our sin debt covered. We are clothed in righteousness and able to stand before Him. Protection.

There is another part of Your protection that is physical. Just as the prophet Elisha knew that God commanded angel armies to fight for His children, remind my husband that God has his back!

When my husband feels vulnerable, remind him that You are for him. And if You are for us, who can be against us?

Amen

We are Never Alone as Christians

There is a beautiful piece of the Christian life that we find repeated in many identity in Christ verses! He never leaves us or forsakes us.

“for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever abandon you…” (Hebrews 13:5 NASB quoting Deuteronomy 31:6)

We are never alone! When life is hard, He is with us. When we need Him, He is always there.

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
    and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.” (Isaiah 43:2 ESV)

Wherever we go, He is there with us. That gives us the courage to live for Him.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9 NASB)

PRAYER To Know We Are Never Alone

Precious Lord and Savior,

Thank You for the promise that we are never alone. We long to sense Your presence, but even when we can not, we know it is always there as another form of protection!

My husband often feels he is bearing the weight of the world on his shoulders. He feels alone in the burden. Remind him that You will never leave him or forsake him.

When he feels overwhelmed, like the waves are crashing over him, remind him that YOU are with him. As the rivers rage all around, You have promised they will not overwhelm him. When he seems to walk through the fires of life, remind him that they can not burn him or consume him because You are with him.

Life is hard and when he feels alone he spirals mentally toward something dark. Help him know how to be strong and courageous. Teach him to not tremble or be dismayed but to believe in You and the promise that You are with him wherever he goes.

Amen

We Have Been Given Abundant Life

There are so many dynamics of the abundant life God promised us. What helps me keep walking when life gets difficult is this clear contrast between what God offers and what the enemy plans.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 NASB)

PRAYER To Walk in Abundance of Life

Jesus, You spoke to the disciples about living an abundant life. So often, in church circles, we teach that abundant life starts in heaven after we die. After studying this verse I think that is wrong. Forgive us for misleading so many!

If the thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy, YOU must have been talking about life on earth because that snake will have no authority over our lives then! Remind us to resist him. Remind us to call on the name of Jesus when temptation comes!

Instead of giving into his lies, help us turn to You. Help us walk with YOU each moment of each day. Only then will we experience abundance here, now on the earth. Abundance of joy and peace and hope and love. The abundance of feeling the warmth of Your presence. We can walk in those things today. Teach us how.

Amen

You Are Filled With Joy

Joy is not just a state of mind based on our circumstances. It is within us because the Holy Spirit lives within us!

“These things I have spoken to you so that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full.” (John 15:11 NASB)

PRAYER To Be Filled with You

Lord,

Life is hard. In this world, we know troubles, we know hardships and suffering. You came to overcome the world. Thank You for the victory. Forgive us for not walking as victories but as victims so often.

You said we could be filled with joy, that Your joy would be made full in that way. In other places, it seems that the Holy Spirit, who lives within us, gives us access to joy regardless of our circumstances. Teach my husband how to access that joy. Give him the desire to live in the fullness of joy even when life is hard.

Remind him that the world needs Jesus and they don’t really want our legalistic, stodgy Christianity. What they need to see is our joy in every situation. Our joy would bring about real change in the world. Give him that mindset. Help bring others to Christ through the joy in him.

Amen

We Are Able To Fight Fear

Another contrast comes from the writings of Paul. The enemy pushes fear. God, however, gives us everything we need to overcome fear. Power. Love. Self-control.

“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7 ESV)

PRAYER To Fight Fear

Alpha and Omega,

You know the end from the beginning. You’ve seen every life and have measured the weight of each choice. You sit enthroned as the Ancient of Days to judge the world at the right time. With the weight of all those things, we struggle with what it means to fear You, to be in awe of You.

You have never failed. But we fail daily. There is a very real fear in my husband of failing one too many times. That fear leaves him paralyzed at times, so afraid of the potential failure that he doesn’t move. Help him understand Your grace and mercy and unconditional love.

We know that the spirit of fear didn’t come from YOU. It is a lie from the enemy that keeps us from fulfilling the calling You placed in our lives. Forgive my husband for believing the lies and allowing footholds of fear to become strongholds in his life.

In fact, YOU promised that the spirit You gave us was filled with every Spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. Lord, You give power… power over the enemy, over the lies. You give love… love to cover a multitude of sins, to propel us to action. You give us self-control… to not allow anything ungodly to rule over us… to control our thoughts and to choose to believe YOU instead of the lies.

When he is tempted to walk in the lie of fear, to believe it would be worse to fail than to try, remind him. Remind him of the love You give. Remind him of the power he has and the self-control that is his if he will walk with YOU. Give him freedom from this paralyzing fear of failure. In Jesus’ name!

Amen

You Were Given the Mind of Christ

What’s more, He puts the very mind of Christ within us to help us understand how to walk in this life.

“For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.” (1 Corinthians 2:16 ESV)

PRAYER To Remember We Have The Mind of Christ

Jesus,

It is a confusing idea to think that we have the mind of Christ in us. You put Your Word in our minds, in our hearts. You have written it on our soul through the Holy Spirit who lives within us after salvation. Thank You for that gift!

Having the mind of Christ, at work in us, should allow us to understand spiritual things, to grow in faith, to put aside foolishness. Help my husband to put away foolish ways. Give him wisdom and knowledge instead. Teach him discretion. Help him walk more in line with the Spirit.

Amen

We Are Given Confidence in Prayer

As God’s children, chosen, called, redeemed, and gifted with abundant life, we are beyond blessed. That blessing includes direct access to talk to the Lord anytime, anywhere. Boldness. Confidence to draw near. He wants to communicate with us!

“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV)

“In whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.” (Ephesians 3:12 ESV)

“This is the confidence which we have before Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” (1 John 5:14 NASB)

PRAYER to Pray Boldly

God our Father,

It can feel intimidating to approach Your throne. Thank You for the permission to pray. Thank You that You have any desire to hear from us and that You care about us and our cares. What a blessing.

Prayer is an area where my husband struggles. He feels it is silly, like talking to yourself. He feels it wastes time and accomplishes nothing or is inactive. Remind him that He is bringing his real needs to the Creator of the Universe. Remind him that You long to hear and intervene when he asks.

Give him the confidence to pray. Teach him boldness to have faith that asks for all of what he needs. Help him live a life where he prays according to Your will and You then answer his prayers. Thank You, for the change this will bring in his life!

Amen

You Are Provided For

We are also promised provision. He will give us strength to do all He calls us to do.

I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13 ESV)

He also promises to supply all our needs as we serve Him in our calling.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 ESV)

PRAYER About Provision

Jehovah Jireh,

There is great pressure on my husband to provide for our family. He wears it like a weighted blanket. At times it is comforting, while at other times it feels suffocating. Yet Your Word tells us that You are the ONE who provides and supplies our every need.

In other places, however, it instructs the husband to provide for his family. There seems to be a confusing or mixed message. Even when he is working to provide, You are actually the One providing through him. You can use him as the vessel through which You pour out provision and he will be blessed or You will use another means and he will miss the blessing. That’s how I think I understand what You are saying.

Even when he is the one providing, You are the one who enabled him to accomplish the work. Help him see You in the midst of his calling to provide. Help him acknowledge You in all his ways and lean not on his own understanding. Teach him to thank and praise You in the process.

Amen

Shame and Condemnation Removed

Of course, we will mess up. The only perfect human to ever walk the earth was Jesus Christ. But He promises forgiveness and no condemnation!

“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1 ESV)

PRAYER About No Condemnation

Christ Jesus,

We thank You and Praise You that You do not condemn us for the sins of our past. Your forgiveness washed away every stain, every sign that we were sinners, lost and separated from You. Thank You!

Thank You more that You continue to forgive us as we struggle to give up areas that are footholds and strongholds of lifelong sin in our lives. Your forgiveness knows no limit! It is awe-inspiring!

Thank You also for not labeling us by the old habits of sin and shame when You see us. You do not condemn us for who we were or what we battle. Instead of shame or condemnation, You look on us with love and grace. You bless us with Your name. It is so beautiful.

My husband still hears those old names when he thinks about himself. He condemns himself as a failure and a burden, as an alcoholic and an outcast. Please renew his mind and replace the lies of the enemy with Your truths. Help him walk in his new identity in You. When the enemy tries to slip in those old lies and names, shame and condemnation, remind my husband of Your love. Remind him who You say he is in Christ Jesus.

Amen

Blessed By The Father

Then, of course, there are blessings that He showers upon us as His children. Strength. Clear paths. Beautiful!

“The God who girds me with strength
And makes my way blameless?” (Psalm 18:32 NASB)

he has good plans for our lives when He calls us.

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11 ESV)

There is also the blessing that He will answer and be found by us when we seek Him with all our hearts!

“Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will let Myself be found by you,” (Jeremiah 29:12-14a NASB)

You Are Given A Firm Foundation

Isn’t it comforting to know we are not just thrown out to the world, but we are rooted, built up, and established in the Lord? He equips us for the work He calls us to accomplish.

Rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.” (Colossians 2:7 ESV)

We are Filled With Him

It took a long time to understand this part of our identity in Christ. We have a lot of work to do as His children but we don’t do it alone. The Holy Spirit is within us to do His work through us when we allow Him to fill us up to overflowing.

“And you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority.” (Colossians 2:10 ESV)

PRAYER To Embrace God’s Blessings

Lord, You shower us with blessings. My husband struggles to see the blessings through all the struggles. Today I pray You would open his eyes to see how You gird him with strength for each new day and each new battle. You make his way blameless. How crazy is that!? You see how he wants to walk the sinful path but You direct him toward what is righteous!

You have plans for his life. Help him to see that You desire good for him and not evil. Remind him that You have a future and hope in mind for him, not the hopelessness he courts.

Through all of the trials he faces, remind my husband to pray because You promise to listen and be found by him. Mold him more into a person who seeks You with all his heart. That is the kind of searching that leads to victory and good.

You have blessed us with spiritual roots. You have built my husband up and established him in faith. Let that lead him to a thankful spirit and a grateful life.

You have also filled him with You. You live within him meaning he will never be alone. He has the head of all life dwelling in him. Let that knowledge inspire a holy awe and reverence as well as a desire to live a life that honors You. A life that loves You because of the love and blessings You have showered upon him.

Amen

You Are Loved: Identity in Christ Verses To Pray

The love of God is something beyond explanation. He lavishes that love upon us as His children.

“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!” (1 John 3:1 NIV)

He redeems us and forgives us because of that love and grace.

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our wrongdoings, according to the riches of His grace which He lavished on us. (Ephesians 1:7 NASB)

The Lord sees us as precious and honored. What a huge love!

“Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.” (Isaiah 43:4 ESV)

He favors us. Just wow!

“He favored us in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:6 NASB)

PRAYER To Know You Are Loved

Sweet Spirit, You lavish us with the great love of the Father! That we would be called children of God is beyond comprehension. Why choose us? Why put up with us? It is unfathomable.

I know my husband wrestles with feeling loved or lovable. He feels like a failure, like a fool, like the least of these. Thank You for coming for all of us as the least of these! Thank You for loving us and adopting us and continuing to pursue us in Your great love!

The redemption and forgiveness you lavish on us is undeserved. We could never have made our own way to You or earned any of that. Also, we could never repay what You have given. The gifts of Your love are unconditional. Help my husband remember that whenever he is trying to earn Your love or repay Your love out of obligation.

You see him as precious and honored. Remind him of that when he is striving to prove his worth. You love him because You love him. You favor him because You do and nothing he could do will ever change that. Help him walk in that love. It will shift every area of his life if he accepts Your love. That is what I long to see in him.

Amen

Adopted and Joint Heirs With Christ

Becoming children of God is a difficult concept to understand. I love that Paul compares it to adoption.

“In love He predestined us to adoption as sons and daughters (Ephesians 1:5 NASB)

As adopted children of the LORD, we are also heirs in His kingdom. A blessing that can not be revoked.

“And if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” (Romans 8:17 ESV)

That adoption is available to any and all who believe in Jesus. He was the first to be inclusive and tolerant… just saying.

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,” (John 1:12 ESV)

We inherited something Spiritually that is beyond description as His children.

“In Him we also have obtained an inheritance “ (Ephesians 1:11 NASB)

What is Galatians 4:7 if not another promise of blessing? Paul claims that we are free from slavery to sin because we are heirs with Christ.

“Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God.” (Galatians 4:7 NASB)

PRAYER To Know He is Adopted

Abba, How is it that You chose us? It is beyond what I can wrap my mind around. Not only did You choose us but You also loved us so much You chose to adopt us into Your family. Thank You. Help us always remember we represent You now as Your sons and daughters.

As children of God, we became heirs with Christ. Heirs with Christ, joining Him in suffering to glorify You and joining Him in an inheritance in glory. That is humbling. Help us live worthy of that adoption.

Help my husband to embrace this as part of his identity in Christ. Join heirs with Christ, a son of God, a prince in the Kingdom of the Lord. You invited him and he believed. Let that sink into the very core of his soul.

He wrestles with feeling like he is not enough. Remind him He has an inheritance in You and You have blessed him with every Spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms. When he feels less than… help him remember that You are more than enough and You are his.

This applies also to areas where he wrestles with active sin. Being adopted into Your family, a joint heir in the Kingdom of heaven… at its root… speaks to a higher status. He is no longer a slave to sin. Yes, he can choose to live in sin, but he can also choose to walk away from it through the power of Christ in him. Help him lay aside the chains of sin and walk in the freedom as a son of God.

Amen

We Are More Than Conquerers

Repeatedly Scriptures about our Identity in Christ suggest that we are the victors. That seems difficult to believe in the midst of the battles we face each day. But I believe the victory is Spiritual. We overwhelmingly conquer because He holds us so tightly that nothing can separate us from the love of God.

“But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39 NASB)

PRAYER To Live As A Conquerer

Father God,

It is not enough at times to just know these identity in Christ verses. As we walk through life, it beats us down and we begin to believe the lies. Failure. Unworthy. Unlovable. Less than.

The enemy throws trial after suffering after chaos into our lives. It feels like we lose more battles than we win. It feels overwhelming. Forgive us for believing the lies. Forgive us for believing the feelings.

You say we are more than conquerors; that we overwhelmingly conquer. Help us walk in that identity. As My husband lives each day, feeling the criticism and judgment of all those around him, remind Him what You say of him. He is loved by the God of the Universe!

There are real struggles he faces every day. When they come at him, help him face them as the victor in his heart and mind and not as a victim. As he faces his mortality, remind him of a home in glory. As Spiritual things confront him that he can’t see and doesn’t understand, remind him to put on the full armor and keep pressing forward.

When things from the past threaten him, remind him that he is forgiven! Let there be no fear of the future because You are already there with him. And any other thing that breeds fear or anxiety, let him walk firmly in his identity! Loved by God. Never separated from God’s love! Let that be his life’s song and word, always on his lips and in his mind regardless of what he faces!

Amen

You Are Citizens of Heaven

As adopted children of the King of kings and heirs with His son, we are no longer citizens of this earth. Surreal right?

“But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ…” (Philippians 3:20 ESV)

That also classifies us as saints. That’s hard to swallow because we think of saints as near-perfect people who perform the miraculous. That is just a man-made tradition and is not based on Scripture. Scripture calls all Believers saints. Something to think about!

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,” (Ephesians 2:19 ESV)

PRAYER To Remember We Are Citizens of Heaven

Father of Spirits,

We live in the flesh on this planet. The idea that this world, where we were born and have walked, is not our home is confusing. How can we live remembering we are citizens of heaven?

You describe heaven as something perfect yet we are far from perfect. Help us keep heaven in mind as we live on earth. Help us keep a godly perspective.

My husband longs for the dream of this world; prosperity, comfort, and health. I don’t know if those are wrong, but they are not the things that You dream about. Help him shift to care about winning the lost and shining Your light all around him. That will not be comforting. It may leave him impoverished. It could cost his health. Help us both care more about the things of heaven than the things of earth.

Amen

Bible Verses on Identity and Purpose

Our identity in Christ and our purpose are tied together. We are able to serve Him because of who He is and what He’s done in us. Because of His great love for us, we can serve in the Spirit. Because of our love for Him we long to serve our purpose as His children.

“Such is the confidence we have toward God through Christ. Not that we are adequate in ourselves so as to consider anything as having come from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” (2 Corinthians 3:4-6 NASB)

Bible Verses About Identity and Worth

If you ever wonder about your worth to God, just remember what Paul taught. He values you so much that He made you His living temple. And He will defend you in that role!

“Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone destroys the temple of God, God will destroy that person; for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17 NASB)

Bible Verses About Value and Worth

The idea of value and worth is not popular in the Church, but there is truth in this. God stepped down in the flesh to make a way for a relationship with us. There is value and worth in that action.

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8 ESV)

“Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:31 ESV)

PRAYER to Apply These Verses about Our Identity in Christ

Lord Jesus,

You have called us and loved us and chosen us and blessed us. These things are true to our identity in Christ as seen through all the Scriptures about our identity in Christ in the Bible. But none of those things matter if we don’t internalize them and allow them to change us! Help us!

My husband struggles to see his identity and purpose. He struggles hard in many seasons. Help him have the same mindset that the early Believers had. They knew they were inadequate in themselves but that they had God living inside them. You in us is what makes us able to live in the purpose You called us into! Never let him forget You are in him and that’s all that matters.

He also wrestles with his worth. But You placed Your spirit within us and made us the temple of God. You would not have done that if there was no worth in our soul. Help him see that and live worthy of the calling.

He struggles to prove his value and worth, or he falls short and gives up entirely. Forgive him. Teach him a different pattern. Remind him that You loved him before he was born, fully knowing all the shortcomings of his life. You love even the sparrows, so help him see that You also love him. He is worth more than birds.

Teach his soul to see himself clearly as You see him. Loved. Chosen. Adopted. Blessed. Worthy. Valuable. Created for a purpose.

Be glorified through his life.

Amen

Psalm 139 Describes Our Identity in the Lord Perfectly

There are many identity in Christ verses that we can claim, but apart from Ephesians, no other book but Psalms could you simply pray back to God. David talked constantly about who he was and who God was. It is the perfect place to end our time today.

Psalm 139 speaks to our identity as children of the Lord in several specific areas.

Your Identity in Christ: Created By God For A Purpose

God created you. On purpose, you were formed in your mother’s womb! All the things that are a part of who you are… God planned that for a purpose!

You have encircled me behind and in front,
And placed Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot comprehend it.

For You created my innermost parts;
You wove me in my mother’s womb.
I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.

Your Life Has a Purpose and Is Seen

Your life was no accident. Not only did God create you on purpose, with a plan, but He also sees you live that life. He writes down what you do and takes note of all the things happening to you!

And in Your book were written
All the days that were ordained for me,
When as yet there was not one of them.

He is with you throughout all the parts of your life as well! Beautiful!

How precious also are Your thoughts for me, God!
How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the sand.
When I awake, I am still with You.

The Lord Sees Into Your Heart

Not only did He create you and make a plan for you and notice all the things you do, but the Lord looks deeper. He sees into your heart. He knows your intentions; not just what you did but why you did it! That speaks to a God who loves you and cares!

Search me, God, and know my heart;
Put me to the test and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there is any hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.(Psalm 139:1-24 NASB)

PRAYER From Psalm 139

Dear Lord,

You have searched me and known me.  You know when I sit down and when I get up; You even understand my thoughts from afar.  Yes, you examine my life every day as I walk the path, and You are intimately acquainted with all my ways.

You know me better than I know myself. Before there is a word on my tongue, when it is still a thought in my mind, O Lord, You already know it all.

You have enclosed me behind and before And laid Your hand upon me.  Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, and I cannot understand it.

You wove me together by hand within my mother’s womb.  My life was planned and chosen by You.

Thank You!

I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.

Let me never forget that my frame was not hidden from You, When I was made in secret, And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

You know me, knew me, and loved me in spite of all the mess of my life.  Thank You!

Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there is any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.

Mold me more into Your image this day.  Help me never forget Whose I am, Father.

Amen
