Why Do You Need Mother’s Day Bible Verses?

Over the years I’ve made no secret of my dislike for Mother’s day. The holiday comes every year and I shrink back waiting for it to pass. But here’s the thing, the holiday does come every year. And regardless, if I love it or hate it, we all have a mother or are a mother or want to honor a mother figure in our lives.

So Mother’s Day Bible verses are my way of finding that middle ground.

“One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind…  for if we live, we live for the Lord, or if we die, we die for the Lord; therefore whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s.” (Romans 14:5-8 NASB)

What Does The Bible Say About Mother’s Day?

The Bible does NOT specifically mention Mother’s Day. Surprised?

Why are there no Bible verses about Mother’s Day? Because the command is to honor your father and mother, not one day a year, but all your life long. In fact, the Bible is so serious about that one command that it is repeated almost 40 times throughout Scripture!

Whenever God repeats something we NEED to pay attention. Here are just a few:

Honoring your parents brings blessings. Did you see that?

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12 ESV)

The blessing is a long life. I joke with my kids that they will live longer if they don’t stress me out… but I don’t think that’s what this means.

“‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.” (Deuteronomy 5:16 ESV)

Also, it’s the first command that comes with a promise. Cool!

“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise)” ( Ephesians 6:1-4 ESV)

It makes a bigger impact when the words come from Jesus Himself. Don’t you think?

“You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” (Luke 18:20 ESV)

More Verses About Honoring Your Father and Mother

I bet you expected those Scriptures for Mother’s Day to be in this list, but here are a few that I didn’t expect. These verses bring specific directions about honoring your mother and father. Seriously, they are the best Mother’s Day Bible verses in my mind… So much so that I will be teaching them to my kids this coming week!

Pst. These would be great for Mother’s Day cards for children who want to say they are sorry and will try harder to honor going forward… just a thought.

Listen to your parents and don’t despise them!

“Listen to your father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” (Proverbs 23:22 ESV)

Don’t revile your mother or father. Death follows.

“For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’” (Matthew 15:4 ESV)

Also, don’t mock or scorn your parents.

“The eye that mocks a father and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures.” (Proverbs 30:17 ESV)

Don’t curse them either.

“If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness.” (Proverbs 20:20 ESV)

“Whoever curses his father or his mother shall be put to death.” (Exodus 21:17 ESV)

To dishonor them will end badly too.

“‘Cursed be anyone who dishonors his father or his mother.’ And all the people shall say, ‘Amen.’” (Deuteronomy 27:16 ESV)

What Is A Good Bible Verse For Mother’s Day?

These are some encouraging verses for moms. Personally, I go back to them over and over to keep the faith as raising children can be tough some days. Anybody got an, “Amen,” for me?!?!?!

“These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7 NASB)

For Mother’s Day, why not write these on a card? You could use them to point out how she shines in these ways!

“let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” (1 Peter 3:4 ESV)

A mother or Spiritual Mother or Mentor would love to hear 1 Peter 3:4 said over her life.

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children.” (Deuteronomy 4:9 ESV)

Deuteronomy 4:9 is one I go back to again and again. It is MY job to teach my children about the Lord. If there is a woman in your life teaching you about the Lord, thank her for that investment!

More Encouraging Verses For Moms

Do you need some Bible verses for mothers to just encourage you? These would fit in the category of Mother’s Day Bible verses for cards. Honestly, any from this article would work, but these are some of my favorites!

Remember, children are a blessing.

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.” (Psalm 127:3 ESV)

There is a blessing in not growing weary!

“Let’s not become discouraged in doing good, for in due time we will reap, if we do not become weary.” (Galatians 6:9 NASB)

The instructions of our parents are a wreath that can bring victory in our lives.

“”Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not ignore your mother’s teaching. They are a graceful wreath for your head and necklaces for your neck.” (Proverbs 1:8-9 NASB)

Don’t lose heart! Keep raising those children to know and trust the Lord. One day it will come back for good.

“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not abandon it.” (Proverbs 22:6 NASB)

Not only will it pay off to keep pointing your kids back to Jesus, but it will bring praise and wonder one day!

“We will not conceal them from their children, but we will tell the generation to come the praises of the Lord, and His power and His wondrous works that He has done.” (Psalm 78:4 NASB)

Remember it is more than your words, your example teaches so much!

“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned.” (Titus 2:7-8 NIV)

What Psalm Is For A mother?

There are many Psalms that speak to a mother. In fact, I found this when searching out Bible verses about mother’s love.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:13-14 ESV)

In a world where giving birth to that miracle is optional, I think it is important to thank our moms for going the distance. Just acknowledging her part in this is beautiful!

“You have taken account of my miseries; put my tears in Your bottle.” (Psalm 56:8 NASB)

When we are struggling in our motherhood, it is a good reminder to know God see’s and takes note of every tear.

“Because Your favor is better than life, my lips will praise You. So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.” (Psalm 63:3-4 NASB)

And when we struggle, we can praise Him because His blessings fall to those who raise their hands and praise Him even in the storm.

“I will raise my eyes to the mountains; from where will my help come?” (Psalm 121:1 NASB)

He is our help. Never forget that!

What Does Proverbs 31 Say About Mother?

Some of the best Mother’s Day Bible verses come from Proverbs 31. Honestly, you can make your mother’s day or mentors day by comparing her to this godly woman!

“Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future.
She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
She watches over the activities of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.”
Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her the product of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.” (Proverbs 31:25-30 NASB)
  • Does she show strength and dignity?
  • Is she wise?
  • Do her words teach kindness?
  • Is she diligent to work hard?
  • Can you call her blessed?
  • Does she fear the Lord?

Tell her!

Mothers In The Bible

There are many times I can relate to mothers in the Bible. Their stories speak to me in the midst of trying seasons. These are some verses you can use as a tribute to mothers in the Bible when honoring someone in your life.

Sarah is a great example of a godly mother who persevered through hardship. She was far from perfect but is still called out as a woman of faith.

“And by faith, even Sarah, who was past childbearing age, was enabled to bear children because she considered him faithful who had made the promise.” (Hebrews 11:11 NIV)

The mother of Moses is another great example of perseverance in hard times to the calling of motherhood!

“By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.” (Hebrews 11:23 NIV)

Mary is the perfect example of motherhood. I love that she was gentle and thoughtful.

“And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.” (Luke 2:51 NASB)

Timothy’s Spiritual Mothers are well noted for their strong faith. And though we don’t know them, we see their legacy in his life.

“For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well.” (2 Timothy 1:5 NASB)

Bible Verses About Mothers’ Prayers

As a mom, I am always praying for my children. Sometimes It’s nice to be reminded that mothers have been praying since the beginning. Here are some Prayers of mothers in the Bible. Most of these I prefer in the KJV so they are Mother’s Day Bible verses KJV.

The prayer of Hagar is powerful. She cried out to the Lord when they were near death and He heard her!

“And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?” (Genesis 16:13 KJV)

Our children are both miracles. Hannah’s story speaks to me in a powerful way as a result.

“For this boy I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.” (1 Samuel 1:27 NASB)

Who can forget Anna, who had been praying and waiting for the Messiah?

“Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess… a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.  And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.” (Luke 2:36-38 KJV)

Bible Verse In Memory of Mothers

This will be the 2nd year I celebrate Mother’s Day since my mom went ahead of me to Heaven. It brings a bit of sorrow thinking of all the things I still hoped to share with her in life. How can we honor mothers who have passed on?

These verses speak of a blessing and a legacy that they passed on to us.

“The Lord bless you, and keep you;
The Lord cause His face to shine on you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord lift up His face to you,
And give you peace.’” (Numbers 6:24-26 NASB)

We are in the thousand generations of those who loved Him.

“Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His faithfulness to a thousand generations for those who love Him and keep His commandments;” (Deuteronomy 7:9 NASB)

Because of her choice, I serve the Lord today.

“But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.” (Joshua 24:15 NIV)

Life has moments that are tearful without my mom. When those moments come I turn to Isaia 40:31.

“but those who hope in the Lord
    will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31 NIV)
