50+ Waiting On The Lord Verses To Bring Hope

Are you waiting on the Lord for something in your life? I have been for more than a decade. Waiting is challenging. Today I want to share some waiting on the Lord verses with you to encourage us both in the waiting time.

Why Study Waiting on The Lord Verses From the Bible?

It may seem out of the blue, studying waiting on the Lord verses together, but let me share the why behind this shift.

In my early 30’s, I was at a low point. My difficult marriage seemed broken beyond repair. My youngest child was struggling in ways I couldn’t understand. Financial struggles wouldn’t let up. My health began to fail. Nothing was going my way.

At the time, I attributed most of our problems to my husband. He was the problem. I wanted to divorce him. I could do this badly on my own, I reasoned.

One evening, I was driving to church to talk it through with a pastor friend and his wife when I heard from the Lord. His voice was a still small whisper in my mind. It shocked me.

“Wait.”

That’s all He said. “Wait.”

What Does It Mean to Wait On the Lord?

As I drove that night, I had been crying out to the Lord. I was angry and scared and filled with blame. With that one word, He began to shift my thoughts.

Wait. Wait on what? I remember wondering out loud… Wait for my husband to change? Wait for our daughter to heal? What am I waiting for?

The Bible says, “Wait on the Lord.” Wait on the Lord meaning… what exactly?

What was I supposed to wait for the Lord to do? How can you wait for the Lord?

  • Wait
    • Stay where you are.
    • Delay action until a particular time or until something else happens.

How Many Times Does the Bible Say to Wait on the Lord?

At the time, all I understood was that divorce was not God’s will for my life. He wanted me to stay… to delay the action I was planning until something else happened.

What was I waiting to happen? Who was doing the something I was waiting to happen?

I assumed (Big Mistake) that I was waiting for the Lord to change my husband, to heal my body, to bring understanding and mental health to my children, to shift our financial situation… I was waiting for the Lord to move.

BUT… I didn’t go to the Word for clarity. SMH! How many times have I advised you to do that? To take a Word from the Lord to the WORD of the Lord to confirm and clarify what He said! It is critical for the Christian life!

Today we will do just that.

How many times does the Bible say to wait on the Lord?

Depending on how to phrase it, nearly 1000 times! That’s important!!!!!!

Stories of Patience In The Bible

Bible characters are beautiful examples of waiting for God to move. The stories of Abraham, Hosea, Jesus, and the New Testament church as a whole teach us to wait, expectantly for the fulfillment of promises the Lord has made.

More than the watchmen for the morning;
Yes, more than the watchmen for the morning.” (Psalm 130:5-6 NASB)

Wait on God’s Vengeance

God and Jesus Waiting

Who waits for the Lord? Everyone! We have seen countless saints in the Scriptures waiting on the Lord. Now, we turn to examples where Jesus waited for ministry to begin, and where God has waited for the end of time as we know it.

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” (Matthew 4:1 NASB)

“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” (Matthew 6:34 ESV)

“Then the angel … swore by Him who lives forever and ever… that there will no longer be a delay…” (Revelation 10:5-7 NASB)

“He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming quickly.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” (Revelation 20:22 NASB)
