Why Study Abundant Life Scriptures from the Bible?

I was saved and baptized as a very young child. I spent years attending services, learning lots of religious words, and doing all the religious activities they teach us to do in Sunday School, all the while remaining immature, a babe in my faith. Sadly, I learned, rather the hard way, that we can grow as Christians but not ever actually mature in our faith.

We can (but should never) be hearers of the Word while not doing what it says to do in our daily lives (James 1:22).

I wanted something more… something real. Don’t you?

For me, the shift from being a fat, content, and spiritually asleep Christian babe happened when I began to understand that God desires an abundant life for us all. That is why we must study these abundant life Scriptures! We need to stop growing and begin maturing.

Abundant Life in the Bible But Vs. Abundant Life in the Church?

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came so that they would have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 NASB)

This Scripture for abundance has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?

These are the words of Jesus. Jesus said we would have an abundant life. He came to bring it – to make a way for us to live in abundance.

Abundant Life is Also Mentioned in the Old Testament

This wasn’t a new idea for believers. There are countless Bible verses about abundant life in the Old Testament, where it is either stated outright, like in Psalm 36, or it is implied, as we will see in a moment.

“They feast on the abundance of your house, and you give them drink from the river of your delights.” (Psalm 36:8 ESV)

It has always been God’s plan for His children! God’s abundance in the Bible is clear!

But what about when your life does not look anything like the abundance God portrays in Scripture? If your story is filled with pain, betrayal, loss and trauma, how do you reconcile reality with the Bible?

Reconciling Abundant Life Scripture With Real Life

Now, I grew up in the church, but I never learned about an abundant life. I knew about salvation and sin and the judgment of God. We were taught to walk a line, to strive toward holiness and righteousness with all we had. But there was no joy, no peace, no sense that the Lord was pleased with all the working and striving…

To add to my confusion about this “abundant life” was the reality of a traumatic life, one filled with abuse and rape, poverty and desperation, uncertainty and fear… There was nothing abundant about my life.

Instead, there was hurt and betrayal, which bred mistrust, fear, and a need to control everything.

What began to turn things around was a glimmer of hope found in John 10:10 (the most well known of all the abundant life Scriptures.

Abundant life. That could be mine… right here… right now? I could hardly believe it was possible, but there it was from the mouth of Jesus.

What is Abundant Life in the Bible?

Scripture does not say that an abundant life is about wealth or ease. Instead, it’s about how the Lord walks with us (His presence and His promises) through whatever we are facing.

An abundant life is one filled with:

God’s Character in Abundant Life

  • Mercy and Compassion in Abundant Life

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23 NKJV)

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?” (Romans 8:32 ESV)
    • This is a life where every new morning we wake up there is:
      • New mercy – where God withholds deserved punishment or offers favor and forgiveness.
      • New compassion – a deep, empathetic feeling of concern that God has toward us.
        • And it does not fail because God is faithful!
        • His faithfulness is evidenced by God sacrificing His son!
  • Good Good Gifts for Abundant Life

“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” (James 1:17 NASB)
    • Our Father, gives us good gifts according to this Bible verse on abundant life. No, perfect, heavenly gifts.
      • They come from Him because He is faithful and doesn’t change His character or His mind.

Grace To Live An Abundant Life

  • Grace for God’s Abundance

“For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace. (John 1:16 NASB)
“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” (2 Corinthians 9:8 ESV)

“And the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 1:14 ESV)
    • The Lord pours out grace upon grace toward us… Grace is God’s unmerited favor, meaning we could never earn it, repay it, or deserve it. He just pours it out into our lives.
      • And not just a bit, grudgingly, because He made some promise thousands of years ago. No, He pours it out from His fullness… Here, I picture David singing in Psalm 23 that his cup runneth over.
    • We are also promised that all grace will abound to us.
    • Faith and love are a part of God’s grace!
  • Blessings in the Abundant Life

“but just as it is written: “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, And which have not entered the human heart, All that God has prepared for those who love Him.”” (1 Corinthians 2:9 NASB)

“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life…” (Psalm 23:5–6 ESV)
    • We can’t even begin to picture all the abundance the Lord has prepared for us – both in this life and in the life to come!
    • Mercy and goodness following us are signs of abundance in Scripture.

Identity & Relationship With God in The Abundant Life

  • Adoption: Abundant Life as God’s Children

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God…” (John 1:12 ESV)

“The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. The measuring lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; Indeed, my inheritance is beautiful to me.” (Psalm 16:5–6 NASB)
    • We are called children of God! Adopted. Never able to be cut off. What an abundant life Scripture to stand on!
    • He is our inheritance and that is amazing!
  • The Holy Spirit Empowering God’s Abundance in You

“And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit…” (Ephesians 5:18 ESV)
    • Through the Holy Spirit who lives within us, we are made different; we are given a way to experience joy and relief from trials (without alcohol).
      • The Holy Spirit enables us to walk in power and joy and be different forever. It is a beautiful gift toward the abundant life God promised His children.
  • Guidance in Abundant Life

“And the Lord will continually guide you, And satisfy your desire in scorched places, And give strength to your bones; And you will be like a watered garden, And like a spring of water whose waters do not fail.” (Isaiah 58:11 NASB)
    • We were never called to figure things out alone. He will guide us as we go, giving us help along the journey.
  • God’s Answers for the Abundant Life

“Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3 NASB)
    • The Lord promises that He will answer us when we pray. This brings abundance in every way!

Provision and Daily Needs

  • All Needs Supplied in Abundance

“And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19 NASB)
    • All your needs can be met. What we see in these abundant life Scriptures are promises of provision and protection as we walk with the Lord His way.
  • Provision in Abundant Life

“But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you? You of little faith! Do not worry then, saying, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear for clothing?’ For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided to you.” (Matthew 6:30-33 NASB)
    • He will provide for all our physical needs if we are seeking Him first.

Strength To Live and Abundant Life

  • Strength and Help in Abundant Life

“Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will also help you, I will also uphold you with My righteous right hand.’” (Isaiah 41:10 NASB)
    • When life is hard and we are tempted to fear, He sends reminders that He is with us.
      • He gives us His strength and holds us up through those trials as well.
        • He does it with His righteous right hand – that is a covenant promise that says He said it, so He will do it regardless of our faithfulness because He is faithful.
  • Strength for a Weary Life in Abundance

“Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:31 NASB)
    • When life gets to be too much and we want to give up or lay down and quit, He promises to be right there with us, strengthening us to finish the race well.

  • Joy in the Abundant Life

“that in a great ordeal of affliction their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality” (2 Corinthians 8:2 NASB)

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” (Psalm 16:11 ESV)
    • Who else loves that this promise is in the Scriptures about abundant life?!?!?! Abundance of joy in afflictions is a beautiful truth to hold onto.
    • There is joy in being in His presence. He is always with us and so we can experience this joy anytime!
  • Peace in the Abundant Life

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” (Romans 15:13 ESV)

Fruit of the Spirit in Abundant Life

  • Spiritual Fruit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23 ESV)

“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” (John 7:38 ESV)

“…filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” (Philippians 1:11 ESV)
    • One evidence of abundant life is spiritual fruit. When we walk in abundance, according to the Scriptures, we bear the fruit of the Spirit within us.
    • That fruit flows out of us like rivers of living water! This is a powerful set of Scriptures about living abundantly.
  • More Than We Could Imagine in Abundant Life

More Abundantly Beyond All We Could Ask or Think
“Now to Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.” (Ephesians 3:20-21 NASB)

“For His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.” (2 Peter 1:3 NASB)
    • As big as we could ask or imagine to ask the Lord, He is able to do even more than all of that. The Lord has an abundant life in mind for His children.
    • He blesses us with everything pertaining to life!

What Does The Bible Say About Abundant Life?

As I learned what the Bible said about living an abundant life, I came face-to-face with some hard truths. Living in disobedience stops an abundant life. Refusing to forgive – which I was – was choosing to live in willful disobedience. That journey led to the creation of the study “Real Forgiveness: How Anyone Can Forgive Anything”. In it, I share parts of my story. I share them in the hopes of encouraging you that I am nothing special and – if I can forgive anyone for anything – you can too.

Abundant Life Scriptures Do Not Teach Prosperity

Abundant life is something the Lord has in mind for us all.

I get why my church as a child didn’t teach about this. Why? There have been people who take this wildly out of hand saying that the Lord is somehow obligated to offer every Christian prosperity in the earthly sense.

The Bible doesn’t say that. Jesus’ life was hard; he often went without, He suffered, and He died traumatically. His followers lived that as well. If anyone should have had prosperity as we understand it today, it would have been them. So I feel like we can clearly say that is not what abundant life was all about.

We will experience trial and suffering as Believers, maybe more so than others because we have a very real enemy… and because we grow best sometimes that way.

What Can Abundant Life Look Like?

Abundant life is not about a drama free life or a big home or perfect health. Rather, it’s about a life filled with hope and joy regardless of what you face.

Scriptures about abundant life promise you can know you are NEVER alone, you never walk in your own failing strength through the trials.

Abundant life is one filled with the peace that passes understanding as you near the valley of the shadow of death.

It is joy when you are in pain and hope when all hope seems lost.

It is living in the presence of the Lord, fully assured of His pleasure, as you face anything the world throws at you with grace and humility.

What Stops Abundant Life?

I wasn’t experiencing it in that season for a lot of reasons, which I’ll share in the study, but one of the biggest roadblocks was unforgiveness.

Unforgiveness shifts our position in a way that stops us from maturing or moving forward, getting us stuck in our faith walk. You see, the Lord is jealous for our hearts, jealous to be the One leading us. When we begin to refuse to forgive, disobeying a clear command, we push Him off the throne and take lordship of our lives back. From that position, we will never experience true abundance. It’s just not possible to walk in the blessings of the Father while living in open defiance of His will.

Shifting Back Toward Abundance – Trusting The Lord

It took a lot of heart work to be able to step aside and let Him back on the throne of my heart. Unforgiveness revealed in me a lack of trust in The Lord… it had to be dealt with bit by slow painful bit.

So know that while this study is set up to take 5 weeks, it took me years to walk through the process for every situation. There was no quick fix. But slowly, over time… well before I reached the end of my list of offenders, I began to notice the joy… the hope… the peace… the feeling of His presence… I began to understand some of those promises of abundance.

I want to encourage you to start where you and take one small step at a time until you begin to experience the fullness of His abundance in your life.

How Will You Use These Verses About Abundant Life?

Don’t let this be just another study. Take it slow and apply each principle. Take time to write out the verses and answer the questions. Work through the reflection time each day. If you don’t apply what you are learning, you will not mature.

Go deeper by joining the 5-week Real Forgiveness Study Group.

Meditate on a key verse each week and allow it to become a part of who you are.

If we began to do life in the Word that way, whew, what a dramatic change the church would undergo as countless babes in the faith begin to take their first steps, say their first words, mature, and begin leading and mentoring others to mature.

We can do this.

What will be your first step to apply these abundant life Scriptures?
