My husband is always reading the news and I am always trying to ignore it.  The news is filled with things that I can’t change and make me anxious.  This year God has been convicting me that by ignoring the news for fear or frustration I am missing an opportunity to pray for our country.

Why Should We Pray For Our Country?

‘If I were the enemy, I would…’ is how Priscilla Shirer started each chapter of her prayer book Fervant.

• My enemy would keep me distracted with my own life struggles.
• He would keep me worried and anxious when thinking about the bigger picture.
• The enemy would have me paralyzed feeling unable to make real changes.

Y’all, the enemy is a liar!

Don’t let the victories he’s won in the past keep you from stepping into the battle today.  

• You can make a difference. 
• Fear or anxiety is normal, but fear can push you to action.  
• Prayer is the vehicle for change that can make a difference in our nation and it can fit into the busiest of lifestyles!

Prayer Warriors Needed!

I live in the USA and we are a country in crisis!  Christian in name only, we are living in a time where God’s wrath is beginning to be poured out on us.  The sins of our fathers and the sins we blindly call free choice all come with consequences.  

Maybe you live in another country, facing a similar crisis.  Here is hope.  Prayer changes things!

The Bible is clear that our prayers affect the course of the world we live in!

While we begin being more intentional to say prayers for America (My Country) I want to encourage us to not stop there.  Pray for our world. 

I believe that intercessory prayers for the nations can change everything.  We need to get in the habit of having prayer for leaders and government, prayer for society, and prayer of repentance for our nations!  All of our nations need this kind of intense prayer.

A Biblical Call To Pray For Our Country

What Scripture tells us to pray for our government?

“And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the Lord for it; for in its peace you will have peace.” Jeremiah 29:7 NKJV

God called Israel to pray for the peace of the city they had been carried away captive into.  A nation the thrived on sinful living and was ruled by wicked kings was to be prayed for.  

When the nation we live in has peace we have peace, God reminds His people.  Our country is being rocked by riots, anarchists, sickness, and more.  If ever there was a time to pray for the peace of a nation it is now!  

We must offer a prayer for a country in crisis if we ever hope to have peace again.

How Do You Pray For Your Own Country? A Prayer Guide!

How do I pray for the United states of America?

The question is, how do you start to pray for a country in crisis? 

There are many prayers for a nation in the Bible. In each of them, I see a pattern that helped direct me in creating this prayer guide for our nation. 

• Humility and Healing
• Offering Repentance for Sin 
• Peace, Protection, and Provision
• Eternal Shift

We will lay out the prayer points for our nation. For me, they are 7 powerful prayers for America!

Then we will see specific pray for our country Bible verses to use in guided prayer.

Humility and Healing

God is clear that he is opposed to the proud but defends the humble.  We must pray that our Nation humbles itself.  Humility must start within the church.  We, the Body of Christ must humble ourselves before God seeking His help for our nation.  

Things have gotten beyond what we can change or help and we are lost without God’s divine intervention.  

Not only do we need God to step in, but we also need God to heal the hurt and pain in our nation.  He can heal our broken hearts and minds and bring lasting change.  We need real change.  

Bible Verses About Humility and Healing

“and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 NASB

“O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! and O Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.” Daniel 9:19 NASB

A Prayer For Humility and Healing

O Lord,

You tell us to humble ourselves and pray.  Humility is not our natural posture.  Help us to never forget that every good thing in our lives is from You.  We are not good in our own right.  None of us has earned your love or favor.  We deserve nothing. Any time we get puffed up with pride remind us where we once were.  Sinners.  Rebels.  Hopeless.  

Father, we are full of sin.  Forgive us, Father.   Humbly we come asking for healing. If You do not intervene in our Nation we will fall. We ask You to hear us, forgive us, and bring hope and healing for Your Names Sake.

Offering Repentance for Sin

“Righteousness exalts a nation,
But sin is a disgrace to any people.” Proverbs 14:34

If we have any hope for lasting healing in our Nation we must spend time confessing our sins. As a nation, we have become so comfortable with sin that we call it a free choice.  Sin is a sin to God and I wonder if some of what we are facing as a nation today is a direct consequence of some of the sins of our nation over the years.  

• Taking God out of Schools
• Pornography
• Abortion
• Distorting God’s Design for Sexuality
• Human Trafficking
• Racism
• Drug Addiction
• Alcoholism
• The Deterioration of the Family

Bible Verses About Repentance For Our Nation’s Sins

This is a prayer of repentance for our nation’s sins.

“If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us.

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

And if we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous; He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” 1 John 1:8-2:2

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:31-32

A Prayer Of Repentance For Our Nation’s Sins

Holy Spirit,

We come humbly before You confessing our sins.  My personal sins of pride, self-righteousness, lust, gossip, gluttony, anger, and probably more than I even realize.  

You speak the truth when You say we all sin, however as a Country we have deceived ourselves.  We believe sin is our choice and so we call it freedom but the reality is sin enslaves us and steals our future. 

As a nation, we’ve taken You out of our schools and governments.  We have exploited the beauty of sexual intimacy for the sake of entertainment and marketing. The pornography industry exploits Your gift, aids human trafficking, sex trafficking, and so much more depravity. 

We murder unborn children and turn a blind eye to racism.  As a country, we have given up fighting drug addiction and alcoholism and the family has deteriorated beyond recognition.  These and more are among the sins of our country.  

Precious Spirit, forgive us and change us from the inside out.  Replace bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, slander, and malice with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.  Without a deep heart change, we will not have peace. 

Oh Lord, hear.  Oh Lord, Forgive.  Please Lord, heal our land

Protection, Peace, and Provision

We are a nation in crisis and as such we need God to protect us, bring peace, and provide for our greater needs.  

• Protection from ourselves
  • our sinful nature, our selfish interests, and our prideful tendency to take back control and mess things up.
• Protection from others
  • Outside groups with dividing intentions, outside groups with anarchist goals, other nations who may be tempted to attack while we are divided.

We need peace, a peace that can only come from God.  As the protests ravage our nation in anger, grief, and pain there doesn’t seem to be a way to comfort or support without causing more chaos.  We need to pray for God’s peace to surround all who are hurting and bring healing and hope. 

We need God’s provision, to provide real solutions for the real problems we are facing.  There are real racial crimes at the heart of what is driving the pain today.  We need real solutions to end the racial division that has plagued this nation since its birth.  There need to be people in place who will listen to both sides with discernment and make wise choices to help the process get started.  

Bible Verses about Protection, Peace, and Provision

There are many Bible verses about provision, peace, and protection. We serve a faithful God who is bigger than any problem we face.  Do you believe that? 

“for the Lord your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you.’” Deuteronomy 20:4 NASB

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 4:7 NASB

“The Lord your God is in your midst,
A victorious warrior.
He will exult over you with joy,
He will be quiet in His love,
and He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.” Zephaniah 3:17 NASB

A Prayer For Protection, Peace, and Provision

Great I Am,

we kneel before Your throne, humbly asking for protection.  We believe that if You are for us no can be against us.  Jesus, protect us from our own foolishness and sin.  Protect us from enemies that would seek to destroy our nation. Fight for this country and save us.  

Please bring Your peace that passes all understanding.  Bring peacemakers with passion and compassion and wisdom to speak to both sides of the issue so the other side can hear.  Help us find the way forward. 

We believe that You are in our midst.  Protect us from sickness and war and corruption from every side.  Provide discernment and knowledge for peace and a cure.  Hope and healing lay in Your hands and we ask You to move.

Eternal Shift

At the heart of the crisis in this nation is the need for a savior.  There has been so much sin and violence in our nation because our nation is lost, though it’s named a Christian Nation.  The people do not seek God, know God or care to be bothered by the love He has to give.  

This country needs an eternal shift if we have any hope for lasting change.  The sin that has brought so much pain to our nation and is bringing this crisis to a head will only repeat if there is no deep heart change.  

When learning how to pray for our country, we must pray that our country and leaders. Pray they will seek God, that our people will choose God and that God’s will be done in our Nation.  What we need is a nationwide revival to bring true healing and peace.  

Bible Verses About An Eternal Shift 

There are many Bible verses about the need to keep our eyes on God no matter what we face.  These are some that I love to pray.

“Pray, then, in this way:
‘Our Father who is in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
‘Your kingdom come.
Your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:9-10 NASB

“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God.” Romans 13:1 NASB

A Prayer For An Eternal Shift 

Our Father in heaven, whose very name is Holy.

Let Your kingdom come and Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Teach us to fix our eyes on You and think with an eternal mindset.  Help us to stop looking only for the comforts of today while sacrificing the rewards of heaven.  

You tell us that every person who leads and is part of the governing authorities was put there by You.  We trust You then to move in their hearts and minds to bring about Your will.  Help us pray for our leaders more than we complain about our leaders because we know that prayer affects things greatly. 

Place peace and unity in the hearts and minds of our President, our Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors, and other leaders.  Point them to You and bring hope and healing to our Country Father.

How Do We Pray For Our Nations And Leaders?

After praying for our nation as a whole it only makes sense to then spend time praying over our leaders.  The truth is, the leaders of our nation bear such an enormous responsibility.

They are faced with an overwhelming amount of information. Often, they are surrounded by advisors who have their own agenda.   We must offer prayer for the leaders of our country!

Do you know how to pray for our government?

There are three key areas I believe we must pray for our nation – over the leaders-  to be effective:

1. Discernment
2. Wisdom
3. Wise Counselors

Why Pray for Discernment

Discernment is the ability to judge well, to identify the true nature or motivation of a thing, and tell if it is good or evil. 

Having the gift of discernment is a huge advantage to anyone leading others. If a leader can discern whether the advice given to him is good or whether it is laced with malicious motives that leaders can do what is best for their people.  So we need to pray that our leaders are blessed with the gift of discernment.

Bible Verses About Discernment

Discernment also comes from the Bible, so we need to pray that our leaders are pouring Scripture into their hearts daily. These are a few scriptures about discernment. 

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12 ESV

“But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;” 1 Thessalonians 5:21

A Prayer For Discernment

Father, I ask for discernment for our President, our Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors, School Board, Church Staff, Elders, and other national leaders.  

Give them a desire to read Your Word and act according to its teachings because You tell us it discerns the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  As a Country, we need our leaders to know when someone is manipulating them.  

Teach our leaders to examine everything carefully and only keep the good. Give them dreams and visions to know the right path to take and the right people to trust.  Remove the lure of special interests who bribe and threaten and allow them to lead with integrity and morality.

Why Pray for Wisdom

Wisdom is the ability to use knowledge to make the best decision possible. 

Our leaders are continually making decisions that affect us and our daily lives.  We need to pray that they make wise choices.  We want them to have the best information. They need the gift of discernment, as well as wise counselors who have good motives.

Ultimately we have to accept that God appoints all our leaders for a purpose.  We don’t always like our leaders or agree with their every choice, but if they are God’s leader for God’s purpose we are to pray for them to hear His voice and follow His direction even if they don’t outwardly acknowledge Him.  

Pray for Our Country Bible Verses About Wisdom

There are so many Bible verses about wisdom and making wise choices.  Here are a few but you can find more to pray here.

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy.” James 3:17

“But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5

A Prayer For Wisdom

Jesus,

our leaders need wisdom.  Our President, our Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors, School Board, Church Staff, Elders, and other national leaders have so much information.  Some information is good while much is false and misleading.  Give them the wisdom to make the best choices and know surround themselves with the best people.

You promise that we can ask freely for wisdom and You give it generously.  We humbly ask on behalf of our leaders.  Retrain them to recognize wise counsel as being pure, peaceable, gentle reasonable, full or mercy and good fruit, unwavering, and without hypocrisy.  They have bought into the lie the wise is fast, convenient, and expensive.  Replace the lies with Your truths.

Pray for Wise Counselors

Finally, we want to pray that our leaders are wise counselors to others and are surrounded by wise counselors as they make decisions that affect so many. 

The people who surround our leaders have a lot of sway concerning the decisions that are made.  We want to pray for those people to have pure motives that are directed toward the good of the many rather than their own good.  

Our national leaders are influenced by the people they serve, but more directly by the lobbies and special interest groups that scream the loudest or give the most expensive gifts.  We have to pray that they will vote for the many rather than the most persistent.

Even within churches our leaders are petitioned and advised to do things and approve things that serve a few.  We must pray that they seek godly counsel and listen to the voice of God above the crowd.  

Prayers for the Nation Bible Verses About Wise Counsel

“Where there is no guidance the people fall,
But in the abundance of counselors, there is victory.”Proverbs 11:14

“Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16

A Prayer For Wise Counselors

This is a short prayer for our country that you could copy into your phone and pray anytime!

Holy Spirit,

we believe it is true that You place leaders in their offices.  You are in control and we trust You.  What we ask today is that you surround our President, our Senators, Congressmen, Governors, Mayors, School Board, Church Staff, Elders, and other national leaders with wise counselors.  

Give them honest and morally upright men and women to surround them.  Godly counselors, filled with the gift of discernment to speak into the daily decisions that affect our country.
