Overcome 4 Lies About God That Stop Every Day Freedom

Have you ever thought about what drives your choices every day?  What keeps you stuck and stops the Peace and Freedom you long for in life?  There are 4 Lies about God I believed – as a Christian – that kept me from everything I was longing for.

The lies about God I believed started when I was young.  Maybe you can relate to my story…

Life was hard. We were poor. My parents fought all the time. As much as I prayed – none of that changed.

Lie #1 God is too far away to see my personal struggles

Maybe God didn’t answer my prayers because He was too far away in Heaven.  Where is Heaven anyway?  Maybe way out past Pluto…  So my small problems are just too far and not worthy to look at.

God must not care about me I concluded – maybe no one cares about me – and the church by extension must not care about me.

As life continued – so did the problems.  Abuse and neglect became part of my story.  As much as I prayed they still hurt and continued.

Lie #2 God is too busy to help everyone.

There are billions of people on this planet that God has to watch over and help every day.  Maybe my problems aren’t big enough to rank on God’s priority list.

If God doesn’t see and God is too busy even if He does see – then I have to take care of my own problems I concluded.  I deal with my problems and pain by shutting people out so they can’t hurt me as much.  Can you relate?  My tendency is to take on the role of God in my own life – or at least judge – because I feel like He’s not doing His job well enough (or up to my standard).

Maybe like me, you keep a list a mile long of anything people did that hurt.  Partly to keep from being hurt again and partly so they wouldn’t get away with it.

Lie #3 God doesn’t act in the modern day- not to defend the helpless or punish the wicked

I look around and see no justice.  People hurt others and live “happy lives”.  I just don’t get it.  Maybe God’s just given up on us?

The result of believing this lie was a need to harden my heart – to protect against God and the Church by extension.  Not only would they not see or be too busy to help, but they could also hurt with their inaction.

As the list of people who had hurt me grew – and as I refused to forgive them (God included) resentment and bitterness grew, took root in and dominated my heart.

Have you been hurt and struggle to forgive?  I spent years stuck in that cycle.  I’d love to share the Pathway God lead me through to Forgiveness.  Freedom is on the other side!  It’s Free below!

Resentment and bitterness have a way of destroying every relationship in our lives.  This dynamic duo cause discontentment, complaining and gossip to be the daily conversation – and people will only stick around that for so long.

As people gave up on me, and God seemed to have abandoned me, my personality looked to ways to Please people – to please God.  I began to see all the Rules of religion and all the judgment of God in the Old Testament… And it shaped another life…

Lie #4 God lays out rules it is impossible to keep and standards I can never measure up to.

As I allowed the lies about God to dictate my life choices I came up with a conclusion.  God was an uncaring judge and dictator who I could never please.

The result was a cold heart, a hard heart, a mouth ready to judge and condemn anyone… and all of that while still walking the halls of the church.  I wonder how many other good little church girls are out there – playing the religion game just like I was?!?!?  Much like the Pharisees, Jesus condemned in Matthew.

Matthew 23:26-28 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.  27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.

While I believe we are to pray for the lost and shine the Light of the Gospel I believe that True Revival begins with us.

We – the Church – must break the stronghold the enemy has in our hearts and lives when we believe His lies about Ourselves, Others and God.  It is critical that we replace those lies about God with the Truth of God’s word!

76 Bible Verses to replace and Overcome the Lies about God!

Lie #1 God is too far away to see my personal struggles

The Truth is God is all around, personally involved in our lives – even from birth:

Psalm 139:16 Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; And in Your book were all written The days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

God is watching us intentionally – caring about our lives!

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the Lord are in every place, Watching the evil and the good

also in Psalm 14:2 The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God.

Psalm 33:14 From His dwelling place He looks out On all the inhabitants of the earth

and again in Psalm 66:7  He rules by His might forever; His eyes keep watch on the nations; Let not the rebellious exalt themselves. Selah

There is nowhere we can hide from the loving caring watchful eye of our God!

Job 28:24 For He looks to the ends of the earth And sees everything under the heavens.

Job 34:21 For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He sees all his steps.

Jeremiah 16:17 For My eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from My face, nor is their iniquity concealed from My eyes.

Jeremiah 23:24 “Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?” declares the Lord. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the Lord.

Hebrews 4:13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.

The truth is God is Love.  God is not too far away.  He is near and He sees everything.  The truth is beyond anything we can understand with our human minds but that is okay.  God’s ways are supposed to be beyond our understanding.

We don’t have to understand the truth to believe and accept it and live according to it!

Lie #2 God is too busy to help everyone.

Repeatedly I have believed and heard others believe that God has too much to deal with – too many people to help – to take time for our everyday needs.  It is heartbreaking when we think about how intimately God loves us and cares about the things that we care about.

1 Peter 5:7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

Not only does He care, but He looks for those He can help and defend!

2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars.”

Psalm 34:15-17 The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous And His ears are open to their cry. The face of the Lord is against evildoers, To cut off the memory of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the Lord hears And delivers them out of all their troubles.

He longs to be part of every detail of our lives so much that He instructs us to pray about everything – and leave it for Him to handle.

Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Psalm 145: 18 The Lord is near to all who call upon Him, To all who call upon Him in truth.

God is not too busy, in fact, He goes as far as to search out our hearts and help us!

Jeremiah 17:10 I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.

Job 33:11 He puts my feet in the stocks; He watches all my paths.

I love that God helps us whether we are walking perfectly or not.  The example I love most about this is when He helped Hagar after she had been banished from Abraham’s life.

Genesis 16:14 Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi (Well of the God who Sees); behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

It truly is awe inspiring the way God sees us and steps into our personal lives to work!

Psalm 144: 3 O Lord, what is man, that You take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that You think of him?

Some amazing examples of Jesus being interruptable can be seen in Matthew 12:14-15; Matthew 14:10-25; Matthew 20:30-33; Mark 1: 35-39

Lie #3 God doesn’t act to defend the helpless or punish the wicked any more

The reality is that God works in His Time and in His Way.  I love that we have always struggled with this – and it is documented early in scripture!

Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed quickly, therefore the hearts of the sons of men among them are given fully to do evil.

God is the Ancient of Days – keeping a record of all eternity – and He will act in His authority.

Daniel 7:9, 13, 22 I kept looking Until thrones were set up, And the Ancient of Days took His seat; His vesture was like white snow And the hair of His head like pure wool. His throne was ablaze with flames, Its wheels were a burning fire.

“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days
And was presented before Him.

until the Ancient of Days came and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One, and the time arrived when the saints took possession of the kingdom.

Isaiah 43: 13 “Even from eternity I am He, And there is none who can deliver out of My hand; I act and who can reverse it?”

God keeps His own account of our deeds and will hand out justice.

Revelation 20:12-15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Proverbs 2:22 But the wicked will be cut off from the land And the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

Matthew 13:49 So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous,

God’s timing is more to do with His love than His justice because He loves us so much He wants us to choose Him.

Romans 2:3-8 3 But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same yourself, that you will escape the judgment of God?  Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?  But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who will render to each person according to his deeds: to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.

The Truth is that God Loves us.  He loves so much that He gives us time – but there will come a time He judges.

Living in these truths allows us to release the debts of others – to forgive and be less easily offended and wounded by others because we don’t need to keep a record of their wrongs.

Forgiving others allows Bitterness and Resentment to leave!  Freedom is on the other side of Forgiveness.  Genuine relationships and community grow and our lives are filled with Peace – even amidst the storms of life!

Lie #4 God lays out rules it is impossible to keep and standards I can never measure up to.

God Loves and sets limits in love to keep us from being hurt, from hurting ourselves and form hurting others.

Matthew 22:36-39 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the great and foremost commandment. The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

When we do break those laws of Love God doesn’t want sacrifice or rituals from us He wants our hearts to turn back to Him!

Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; A broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.

Our God is complicated and beautiful as He is Love and Just and Jealous and Compassionate and so much more.

Will you join me in praying that He will reveal what Lies about God we have believed?  Asking Him to help us see them, confess them and replace them with truths.

When we – the body – believe the truth about God and live accordingly we will see Revival begin in the Church.  When we act out of those truths to the Lost world around us, they will join us and the Revival will spread like wildfires across our World!

That’s my prayer. Will you join me in it?!?!

in HIM,
