Setting My Priorities

It seems like everything around me is changing.  Change is hard, ya know?!?!

I am wrestling with big changes: the death of a loved one, a friend who has moved away, the loss of a job, change in my position in several areas.

I am wrestling with smaller things: my children growing up too fast, the end of a season of babies in my life, a new season of writing and teaching and mentoring.

I don’t know about you, but too much change at one time can knock me off balance.  It sort of gets in my head and sets my emotions spinning.  I can easily find myself in a place of sorrow and uncertainty which leads me to fear and insecurity.

I find I need to get my bearings – sort of re-evaluate my priorities and make sure God is not using some of this change to redirect me.  He does that sometimes – gets me uncomfortable so I will listen closer as He moves me in a new direction.

Define Priorities

I have to be deliberate to set my priorities based on scripture if I plan to live a life of discipleship.

When you think about it, every decision we make in how we live our lives is born out of the priorities we set.  Often we set our priorities without realizing it, based on the values of those around us.  That way of living will not help change our lives, our homes or our world in the way we desperately need.

We need to be intentional.

We need to know what God says our priorities should be and how to live them out.

As I dig into the word I find scripture lays out my first priority with crystal clarity.

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment” (Matthew 22:36-38 NASB).

A clear command: Love the Lord your God.  But how clear is that really?  Jesus further clarifies it by saying that we are to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind.  My struggle is that those still seem like vague religious words… grrrrr!

Have you noticed I’m kind of a word nerd?

I am digging into these words and will spend the next few posts walking through how we can practically walk this out in our daily lives.

Are you in that place?  Do you feel fear and insecurity crouching at your door?  Are you feeling overwhelmed by things in your life?

I want to encourage you as I am being encouraged through this study.

This is Love

God loves us.

I can face the changes and fears and insecurities head on -when I remember that God loves me.

God is not changing things in our lives out of spite or vengeance.  God Loves Us!

If He is changing things in our lives it is because He loves us and wants what’s best for us.

That stops my world spinning.

That makes me stop asking

‘Why is all this happening to me?’

and start asking

‘What should I be doing or learning in the midst of this?’.

If that is where you are and you need more encouragement, check out my post True Love this Valentine’s Day.
