A Piece of my Mind or Peace of Mind [Peace Series Philippians 4:8]

A Piece of My Mind or Peace of Mind

Raise your hand if you are fed up with the division and hostility that have overrun every nook and cranny of our culture!  Does it create Anxiety in your life?  It does for me…

It has sucked even the best of us in and spit us back out with fewer friends… with a lost world watching us act just as lost as they are.

A Piece of My Mind or Peace of Mind -[Peace of Mind -Philippians 4:8 Series]

So what can we do about this Anxiety?

I know I know, there’s a lot going on that needs to be addressed.  I am tempted to give the people around me a piece of my mind too…  to add one more angry voice to the pot.  What good is it doing?  It is widening the division.

I have a choice… we all do.

  • We can choose to offer up a Piece of our minds.  We could keep stirring this pot of hate/division soup -solving nothing.

  • We can choose to find Peace of mind.  Figuring out how to rest in Jesus’ “Peace that passes understanding” in the midst of this storm.

When we choose Peace of Mind, we can get to a place of being able to start a conversation about the real issues… as opposed to shouting in angry rants -casting judgment and condemnation on those around us who might not agree with us.

“But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.  For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders” (Matthew 15:18-19 NASB).

According to this passage, our words come from our heart which is tied to our thoughts.  The things that can defile us-start inside our heart in our thoughts.   Then they come out of our mouth.  So if I want to get control of my mouth and stop giving people a piece of my mind, I need to start by looking hard at what I am thinking about.

My words start in my thoughts!

Deuteronomy 11: 18a fix these words in your hearts

for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete” (2 Corinthians 10:4-6 NASB).

Do you see the promise here?

In Christ and under the authority of the Holy Spirit, I have power to take every thought captive.

I have control over what I think.  When a thought leads me down an angry path I can push it out of my mind.

The ability to do this comes through Christ alone.  In my flesh I fail every time, only with Jesus help can I intentionally guard my thoughts.

So we are going to take captive any thought that leads us away from peace and replace it with…  hmmmm… what?

Scriptures give us a clear “how to” about what we should think!

“Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.” (Philippians 4:8-9 NASB).

In the next few posts I am going to dig into the 8 words describing the way we should think… because I don’t like to gloss over a thing and I love to know what the words mean!   Let’s learn to train our minds for peace by examining our thoughts… which comes out of our mouths.

I’d love to hear what you are thinking as we go through this series.  Please leave me a comment below about this post or any in this series on Peace of Mind.

  1. Hi this is kind of of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.

I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted
to get guidance from someone with experience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. honestly, I am the wrong person to ask. I am just learning. I use BlueHost and WordPress and they are super easy for a newbie like me.

  2. I have battled anxiety, fear, and panic. I am a Christian, but the mind is a battlefield! Love reading your post. You definitely have a calling to this! Bless you!

    1. Thanks Raquel. I am really enjoying the process of writing. Hope to connect with you soon!
